Subrace Bonus not applying to max spell lvl.

Post by Thor of Clan Freakery »

Not sure if you guys meant for it or not but i have a 15th lvl svirfnebli cleric that has a 17 wis prior and with the +2 racial a 19, thus only being able to cast 7th lvl spells when in fact should be 8th as well.

Nothing that can be done until the devs can get permanent bonuses (instead of item-like buffs) applied to subraces.

If that's holding you back from being able to cast spells you should be able to, maybe ask a dm if they could hook you up with +2 base wisdom, then do something about the +2 wisdom from the subrace item.

The deal is that subrace bonuses are treated like invisible items, which buff your stats. That means that they do not apply to prerequisites for feats, and minimum spell levels. This is not an ideal situation, but it is how it works for everyone; so JesterOI's suggestion is not going to happen.

Well off the bat an ideal situation doesnt involve bugging a DM every time you pick a subrace. Obviously. But it would be reasonable to script them as permanent bonuses as the origianl races do. I wouldnt think it to be too much work to copy thier script and adjust it appropriatly to the bonuses each subrace requires. But then im not sure if the devs were planning on implementing this fix or are just going to leave it as is. If thats the case then when beta is over ill just not make any subraces and keep it straight forward. Thats the main reason i tested this build to see if they would apply towards the spell limit, or not. The latter being the case. Thanks for the feedback though guys. Only question i have now is whether or not a fix will be done for non-beta NS4.

The problem with scripting them in as a permanent bonus as I understand it is that it would cause problems with enforcing legal characters. NWN will recognize the edit as being impossible to reach with their idea of a "normal" character, and so runs afoul with the cheat protection. Until that is resolved, I think that the buffs will stay the way they are.

There simply is no scripting command for permanent bonuses. The reason is it would mess up the ELC check as mentioned above. Too bad NS4 uses a custom ELC script that could accomodate the subraces... but bioware doesn't care.

Bioware ELC *is* off. Don't know anything about a DM bot though.

If DMs were to do this on an individual basis...

...then how would you keep track of who got modified and who didn't so no one got modified twice?

...what would you do about the subrace object that always modifies stats? Give those who got hand-modified stats a new one for their subrace abilities only and no stat mods?

...how would they go back and award lost skill points (for int bonuses)?

...how would it be fair to those who don't play when DMs are typically on?

...it would make doing a widespread database change to everyone's stats impractical because the hand-modified ones would again double up.

...it would make stat changes to subraces hard to do across the board if some had already been hand edited instead of just changing the subrace object. (however unlikely this may be)

There may be other reasons, but these are just off the top of my head.
