Recent lag spikes (Feb. 2011)

Post by Hyk »

It has come to my (and many others) attention that there has been an unusual amount of lag spikes in the last couple of weeks. This happens when the server is empty as much as it does during peak hours.

Any recent server changes? Something new going on?

More specifics. Lag is something we'd want to take care of if we can, but need to be sure it's at the server and not video lag or your ISP or something :)

I think rubber-banding is probably the best indicator, but that can be your local ISP dropping the ball (or your packets) too :)

If you live in the land of OZ and use a certain !@#$%$ ISP (Optus) then that could be the issue. I've been getting terrible lag spikes over the past week where the game is unplayable for minutes at a time.

For all of those experiencing unusual lag lasting more than 30 seconds, please send a pm to me with the following information:

1) The exact time you experienced the lag.
2) Approximately how long the lag lasted.
3) Your external IP address.
4) A traceroute to ns4.nsrealm.com.

NOTE: It's VERY important that you perform the traceroute AS THE LAG IS HAPPENING. So practice now so you'll know how to do it when the lag hits.

To obtain your external IP address, you can go to http://www.whatismyip.com

Instructions on how to use traceroute can be found here:

Linux/*BSD:

Code: Select all

traceroute ns4.nsrealm.com
Microsoft Windows:

Apple OS X:

Personally I have been experiencing extremely minimal lag - shout out when you're experiencing lag to compare... The more data we have, the better, I'd say.
