Warning about new NVIDIA cards
Due to driver issues, the newer NVIDIA graphics cards do not support gfx acceleration in NWN. See here:

I got a GTX465 and was annoyed to find FPS down the toilet in nwn. A quick google confirmed the issue. If I knew this beforehand I would have considered an ATI.
It seems the only resolution is for a driver update which may or may not happen.
Hopefully this post will save someone from wasting their money like I did.

Thank you very much! I was about to buy that card.
Thank you.
Thank you.

Aren't the ATI offerings much better all around atm anyway?

ATI use to be alot slower to come out with drivers not sure if they still are. Its more a of motherboard/proccessor thing really. Depends on your machine build.
Even the 200 series nvidia cards have issues with NWN, or atleast my 250 does.

Eh, still a little slow, but ATI seems to be stomping all over Nvidia atm.mgrjebbo wrote:ATI use to be alot slower to come out with drivers not sure if they still are. Its more a of motherboard/proccessor thing really. Depends on your machine build.

True, but nvidia usually works better with nwn. Thats why I stick to it.

I'm using an AMD 5870 atm, works great. My only issue is that transitions still take more than 0 seconds. Oh well .Daltian wrote:True, but nvidia usually works better with nwn. Thats why I stick to it.

Re: Warning about new NVIDIA cards
The GTX 285 screams thru NWN as it does most everything else. Haven't found a game yet that makes it stutter. Of course the i7 with 9 gigs of ram helps a little.
I put the IO in socIOpath!

Do you think the CPU is all that important for a gaming rig? I was debating this with a friend earlier today because I'm building a computer and the CPU/mobo is the only part(s) I haven't gotten yet. I'm split between the core i3-550 (or 540 perhaps) and something with quad core, maybe core i5-760 or i7-870?
Obviously the CPU will have some impact, but dollar for dollar (or whatever currency) I always thought that the graphics card was a better investment on a gaming machine than the CPU or other parts.

Re: Warning about new NVIDIA cards
Well, I've found that it really helps with multi-tasking, i.e. if you're doing some building on excell and have NWN open too. i7-8xx isn't that much more expensive either.

Re: Warning about new NVIDIA cards
A good proccessor is pretty important in any machine. Nothing wrong however with a $70 dual core AMD chip. Intel is still overpriced in all their product markets IMO.

Depends on the motherboard, I guess.mgrjebbo wrote:A good proccessor is pretty important in any machine. Nothing wrong however with a $70 dual core AMD chip. Intel is still overpriced in all their product markets IMO.

Re: Warning about new NVIDIA cards
IMO, you shouldent have. When I started playing nwn I was using a athlon 500 with a tnt 2 ultra... If anyone remembers that far back :pDM Ireheart wrote:aye, using a GTX 260 with an i7 and have had no problems so far.Lorkar wrote:The GTX 285 screams thru NWN as it does most everything else. Why would I want to count 12 hours twice? I’m perfectly capable of counting to 24, and while we’re at it, can someone go shoot named time zones. GMT+x is all we need!

"When Robes/Cloaks/Ranged Weapons are not equiped or seen in anyway, the game plays at 250 FPS. As soon as they are visable, it drops to 20 fps. "
It looks like GL_ARB_multitexture is not supported well in nv 400 series hardware...so it switched to a low speed cpu code provided by the opengl driver...
