Barbarian damage reduction

Post by Mixtli »

I'm playing a pure barbarian, and i have noticed when fighting against some mobs, that damage resistance, reduction and immunity don't stack. To be more precise it happens when fighting Guardians in the Icy Crypt, and Shaguin Barons in the water plane.
Only damage reduction is calculated, while resistance and immunity on the items aren't at all. Naturally i tried all sorts of combinations of armor / shield in case they weren't for some reason doing bulge damage, but no. Battle log is very precise, and the damage i take is very real.

This isn't very frustrating as i don't spend a lot of time in these places, but it would be nice if you could look at the properties of these creatures. Save some new barbarian from the horror of first entrance in the icy crypt :)

Do they use halberds/morningstars/scythes/any of the other dual damage weapons? If they are they basically ignore resistance and immunity unless both types are on the same item IIRC.

I have found when a crit lands it bypasses damage resists. This happens on all my toons so it must have always been this way and I never took any notice until recently when a char was being harassed by a Polar Bear. I had all combination of armor or shield test this and none seemed to stop the crit.

I know the frozen mace does pierce and bludge damage but again that should be stopped by the appropriate armor/shield combo.

I believe the guardians in the Icy Crypt are equipped with composite gloves. These gloves do all three types of damage, bludgeon, piercing and slashing. This would allow them to bypass immunity and resistance unless you have all three. Reduction still works since it is not type specific. Possibly the Baron has similar equipment. Not all gear used by monsters drops so they could be using something we have never seen, and never will.

The wepons that do multiple damage are morning star, scyte and helbard. Thos weill direct all damage towards the lest resisted type. If you have a glove with all types as damage, wering piers+slash gear willl protect you from that type of damage.

If I rember correctly imunety is also calculated first, so if you have 25% imunety, and 15/- resistance, damage will first be redused by 25% than 15 is taken off, so if base damage is say 40 you will get -25%=30-15 = 15. on a crit, that would be 80-25%=60-15 = 45 which is way more than double of the previous damage which will make it look like a crit goes throu your resistance...

Why would I want to count 12 hours twice? I’m perfectly capable of counting to 24, and while we’re at it, can someone go shoot named time zones. GMT+x is all we need!

All damage dealt is pushed into the "base weapon damage"... thus gloves with piercing slashing farting whining damage would all get reduced to bludgeoning damage. Creatures can have "creature weapons" that can do more than one base type of damage. There is also a weapon property (Seen on skara sickle, mace, and I think 1 other item maybe) called "Extra Melee Damage: x" where x is piercing/slashing/bludgeoning. This weapon property will make the weapon its on do multiple damage types... nothing else will.

Dont believe me have someone wear pure slashing gear and take ur bard out with a longsword, sing for himself and use a AoV scroll (both +8 BLUDG damage) and you will still do straight slashing damage.

Thanx for all the replys.
I still believe it has something to do with those particular mobs, because at the same time my damage immunity + resistance + reduction works properly against a water guardian, and doesn't work against a Shaguin baron (in the same fight).

One thing i haven't tested is using a 2 resistance type armor + shield like Alkapwn suggested. That should give some more information. I'll get around to it and post feedback.
