Monks

Post by Tal »

So here is the description:

Perfect Self
Type of Feat: Class
Prerequisite: Monk 20
Specifics: The character gains immunity to all mind-affecting spells and
effects, and damage reduction 20/+1.
Use: Automatic

So my question is why does my lvl 33 pure monk fall victim to stunning fist?

cuz stunning fist isn't a spell or a spell-like effect, but someone hitting your noggin so hard, it short circuits your brain. At least that's the way I've always thought of it.

Any one seen serenity? Thats stunning fist, but is's still a mind-affecting effects that monks IMO should not be imune to :) way to fall for your own tricks... I'd love to see a barb that can resist a terrifying rage btw :)

Stunning fist

Post by Tsavong »

Stunning fist is a fort save if I remember right. That implies its not a mind effecting effect.

Mind affecting is suggesting that it changes the way your mind works in some fashion.

Stunning fist is a purely physical effect. It doesn't change the way you think in any fashion whatsoever. It physically removes your ability to think. A bit of a technicality I suppose, but that is the basic reasoning involved here.

Stunning fist as with all such physical attacks, like sneak attack and death attack, is stopped by being immune to critical hits.
Confusion is just a state of mind.

I was just really surprised when I was stunned. I really thought that being stunned was a mind effect. I guess I will not be charging into those ranks of monks head long anymore.

Stunning fist is mind affecting like putting a plastic bag over your head is... purely physical.

Engine-wise anything can be mind affecting if we pass the right parameters... we could even make a reflex save that is considered mind affecting... I don't think there is any in ns4 though.

It was actually fixed a few patches ago that stunning fist was not stopped by mind-affecting immunity, only by crit immunity. My thought on my 20+ monk was why could itthid gazes still affect me

Well under this argument would not Freedom of Movement make you immune to stunning fist? It seems that it’s more of a paralyzing effect then a mind effect so the above spell should give some bonus against it, maybe.

being a "stun" and not "paralysis" FoM won't help....the classifcations of all the effects are really what drives the immunties. stun, paralysis, daze..etc

No, Freedom protects against magical effects that impede movement, grapple and movement penalties underwater. Stunning fist isn't magical, a grapple or terrain ;)

I thought stunning fist was a result of monks training to know how and where to strike at certain nerve points were when hit properly would block the nerve impulses from flowing thru the body, thereby paralyzing the victem temporarily. Basically, affecting the flow of information that tell the muscles what to do which were sent from the brain. Mind still working but the information is not getting out to the necessary parts of the body. Not really a mind affect but rather nerve affect.

An analogy: from a beginning at a lake up high in mountain; water flows down a stream filling successive ponds as elevation descends. Water would normally flow from pond to pond down stream filling each successive pond with water. But if a boulder from a nearby hillside falls into the stream; blocking the flow of water; the successive lower ponds would drain to emptiness. The lake at the beginning is unaffected by the boulder, but the water would be unable to flow down until blockage overflowed or otherwise removed. Temporarily flow of water (info) blocked.

In other words - victem's Chi is blocked.
Murphy's Law:
Nothing is as easy as it looks.
Everything takes longer than you expect.
And if anything can go wrong,
It will, at the worst possible moment.
