Issue with a Trojan

Post by kingfatzo »

IF YOU ARE NOT IN THE MOOD TO READ ALOT, then please dont frustrate yourself and read no further: but i do appreciate any info that anyone is willing to give :D

Issue : i have a Trojan titled "infostealer" lurking on my laptop and main PC. Both computers are networked... And i think i got it from a file from the NWN -IGN vault ---just a heads up to everyone ---

--Note: i have the AOL security center running on my pc's and it does catch the trojan from time to time (probably when it tries to activate it) so it seems that whatever it is trying to do is being blocked by the anti-virus software -- HOWEVER, i cant seem to get rid of it....

What have I tried : I have tried full scans with the AOL software; adaware, and spybot; as well as the mcafee stinger program... (yes all software is up to date) and i upgraded to IE 7-beta hoping it would help.....

--what i am visually seeing --- occasionally as i type info into IE wheter it be a webadress or password, i am asked if i want windows to save my password / information ( this is the AutoComplete feature) which i have always had off and i tell it to turn off and not to ask me again, but it keeps comming up... i am almost positive this is related to the trojan : hence its name ...

another note: I spoke with a few ppl in game already about this issue i am having and so far the solutions i have been given were to buy a Static Router and or run a program called "xcleaner" which from its main site is not downloading

What i am really saying: Basically , i was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on a uber trojan remover, becuase it seems harmless , but who knows what it is really doing..... The last thing i want to do is wipe 2 PC's  but if it comes down to it and i cant resolve this issue then i will have no choice.

Thanks again :)

http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/ with https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1390/

TGPO wasn't too fond of Chatzilla, not everything from mozilla can be made of gold I guess.

Just download the program called SeaMonkey which is made by same people as Firefox you get browser and chatzilla is included.

I personally use Trillian combines ICQ,AOL,MSN,IRC and AIM all in one simultaneously is great as I chat to people on all of them :)

I found it the most user friendly IRC and looks good to

I'm with you, remove microsoft and use linux. Good bye trojan :-) But if thats not possible then these virus killers might be worth a try.

This site might be worth a look. It's a web based virus killer and it's free to use.

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

This is also a free virus killer that might be of some use:

Hope that helps.

While it's always easy to bash microsoft or windows - there is no silver bullet when it comes to trojans/viruses etc. Unix,Linux or whatever is a matter of personal choice.

If you want to keep using IE I would suggest you follow this procedure to limit the possibility of these sort of things happening.

Menu -> Tools > Internet Options > Advanced Tab

Scroll down until you see a box that says Empty Temporary Internet Files on exit.

Also while you are there in the General tab (the first one you see) go and Delete Cookies, Delete Content and check the box when it pops up as well.

Your computer will thank you from all the crap that gets downloaded.

Often trojans/spyware reside in web pages and other files downloaded as part of the web browsing process. If they get to stay for a while in your temporary files folder some will trigger based on another action you take at a later time.

Oh btw I use a combination of all three browsers with my favourite being Opera.

cheers and good luck
