NWN Crashing

I have the same problem, crash to desktop, game just suddenly seems to lock. Here are some things i notcied that can helop reduce in my case....
Locks often when holding curosr over a PC/NPC to check their health
Locks often when trying to rotate camera (hard on to reduce that!)
Will definitely lock with in 2-3mins if you notice you are bugged (common ones i have are not being able to see anyhting in the remains (just a blank inventory screen) and commands in the top left that don't go away)
Also I noticed it crashes (not unsuprisingly) alot more in high lag or as people have said when there is lots going on on the screen.
I think it's mostly a bioware problem (and tends to afflict lower spec systems more) but having said that my NWN crashes maybe once in 2 hours on other severs and maybe twice as often on NS so some of the NS code may be just highlighting the problem....

I've noticed one surefire way to crash the game. If you click to kill a monster... experience lag and don't move... click a few more times... and then when the lag resolves you've got a few clicks queued up. If the monster dies and the target becomes invalid quickly, and you still have a click on him to resolve, I think the game will crash. I've seen it happen twice.
The object you're referencing was likely already deleted and the memory freed. Somewhere, the pointer doesn't get checked for validity and an invalid memory address gets referenced. Keeerash!

On a similar NWN note, has anyone else noticed temporary lockups in CEP based modules? I'm playing the neverwinter OC community type expansion, and it uses a crapload of CEP placeables(WAAYYYYY too many), but anyway, sometimes, depending on what video settings i'm using, it'll freeze for a few secs, then keep going, and it's really really annoying. Not sure if other ppl experience this.

Your computer may be overheating. What OS do you use? Cause if it's XP, that's your problem. XP auto-restarts instead of giving you BSODs to find out what the problem is.
I suggest making sure your case fans and such have good airflow through the power/IDE cables. If there isn't, it can create a vacuum in that area and literally make parts melt.
Also check your CMOS in your BIOS to see if there is an auto-restart function based on CPU temp. I changed mine and Now I don't have restarts.
If it's a crash to desktop, definiotely look at your airflow. If memory overheats it can just quit whatever processes it's running to reduce the temperature.

Dumbasses!!!
Sure signs the server has crashed (not that you have crashed the server, what the hell made you think that? You on craCK>\?):
Click to move somewhere and when you stop moving your character faces the inital direction they were facing before you clicked to make them move.
Click to talk to NPC, you move to NPC and nothing happens or just nothing happens.
Click to attack enemy, you move to NPC and nothing happens.
Cast spell and nothing happens, or initial castng action takes place, but spell doesn't cast.
Click on an area transition trigger, you move to trigger area, but nothing happens.
Click a conversation option and nothing happens.
While using keyboard to run around you notice that the minimap hasn't updated with new terrain.
Click to examine a target (npc or item) and a blank examine window pops up and does update for an extended period of time.
If the server crashed I can tell by using the above hints. Most times I am one of the first 3 ppl, if not the first person, back on the server because I'm not on crack and know the signs of a crashed server for NWN.
It doesn't take a genius children.

If your system restarts by itself when any real system uasge programs are used, try new ram or power supply.
Trying new ram never hurts, because if it isn't the ram, more doesn't hurt.
If it's just the program crashing or whatever, maybe more ram is needed, or an OS that doesn't use [censored] memory managers.
I notice that with the direct connection shortcuts I use for NS like:
"C:\NeverwinterNights\NWN\nwmain.exe +connect ns1.nsrealm.com:5121"
I will "crash" straight to the desktop instead of the sevrer browser, like if I started NWN normally and went through the online options within it to join an NS server.

dude... ur on crack lol
already said tried a new ram, another hdd, another vid card... and nothing... they're all OK... my cpu heat is at 40-57C and motherboard at 30-35C. w/c is practically OK.
and it crashes on different games not just NWN already as i previously thought...
can't be software since i tried 2 hdd already.
can be power supply but why such a specific symptom on playing games?
by the way not all games crashed. some are running smoothly.
i think it has something to do with memory but with RAM being good and OK... (since i tried other RAMs)... and the technician that i went too said my motherboard is OK... so power supply can be related to memory?? how can u fook up the power supply? i mean hey with a bad power supply ur not gonna even reach using MS Word or something...
cuz it does not "crash" per se as in literally crash boom. but it lags to a point that it technically crashed already since u have to reset the pc.
this does not happen on normal use though... weiiiird... still

I catch nwn crashes at the rate of 2-4 a session. Check this site out:
http://www.dachshundsoftware.com/index.html
I use their anticrash software to catch and fix crashes caused by memory leaks.

A Bad power supply may run your computer fine, until you use more parts of your computers.Agent Shiny wrote:dude... ur on crack lol

When playing a game, your hard drive spins more (more usage and swap files), your video card works harder, your sound card is being used more, and also, your cd drive is constantly processing unless you have a no-cd patch for these games, or they run without the cd.
You may not notice any problems until you play a game and the power supply cannot generate enough voltage to all parts simultaneously.
One thing I have discovered in looking for why my client dumps me out to the desktop or BSOD's me. nVidia has a few problems with their drivers that can cause this problem. You would think having paid through the nose for a Ti4600 they would fix this known issue but they havent. There is a workaround for it if you dont mind getting in and hand editing your system registry.
