Passable choices for a 1st time toon:

Druid
Wizard

All 3 of them are casters, and they can become MA in certain professions.

Opps hit submit before even typing. Anywho, a cleric always my personal sugestion for first toon. Cleric spells help cover the deficencies in gear a new player has, is always welcome in a party, self healing and restoring so save precious gold for gear, and by time you get into 30's you have learned a bit of local life and can attempt an end game build. At which point you turn your cleric into a crafter of scrolls and potions. Raise Dead scrolls can NOT be purchased anywhere. A cleric with str n con focus (only need 19 wisdom) can soak some dmg and carry a lot so you can pick up gear to sell that most of your party mates (dexers and mages, etc) will leave behind due to weight.
