NWN on sale at GOG.com but.....

Post by Hyk »

Hello friends,

just a quick FYI: I recently purchased NWN from GOG.com, and I do not recommend it. First it took them a week to send me an authentic CD Key, and once it arrived it doesn't seem to be compatible with NS4. When I log on, most of my toons are completely glitched, areas don't load, and the game crashes constantly.

The game installation file that you get from them is much smaller then what is on the NWN Diamond DVD, so I suspect they made changes that don't work with NS4.

The only reason to use gog.com for this game would be to get a CD Key if you absolutely cannot find one at a store near you, but as I said, you have to beg them for one, and it can take a week or longer.

Thanks for that Hyk.

Also, if you can't find your CD Key because you have misplaced your NWN book, they are stored in an ini file in your NWN directory - nwncdkey.ini. They are easy to read, make a back up copy, print them out, etc.

That's a bummer, as I did notice that sale last week, right after I bought a copy from Best Buy the week before. The Diamond Editions are still being sold in stores. I'm thinking I might start hoarding them as I see them on the shelves. (I guess I already have started). Just in case.... If I start accumilating a collection of them, perhaps I can send them out to those in need.

So you're saying the game is made by Bioware? J/K that sucks.

Actually now that I think about it, it may be a good idea to mention somewhere that NS4 is not compatible with the the gog.com version of the game. A couple of the toons i tried logging on where doing stuff that probably wasn't too good for the server (teleporting around the map, malicious in Ave, etc.)

If it's a bad copy of the original nwn game made by gog.com and not an endorsed bioware cd, wouldn't that be considered a pirated copy punishable fines and jail time?

Been some significant advertising about it, and various gaming publications have made mention of it. Seems like its sanctioned, but maybe its not....

gog.com is an established and well-regarded game retailer. NWN is probably one of only a few games they sell which require unique cdkeys for multiplayer to function properly. I'm sure they're doing their best to resolve the issue given how little support Atari typically provides to third parties.

When asking for my CD key, the only feedback I got were responses on the GOG forums in the direction of "GOG staff doesn't work on the weekends" and "Go on their twitter or facebook and ask there, you may get a faster response". Pretty sure they rely on a third party for the CD keys and there is no automated request system, so you are stuck waiting for your key.

CD Key aside, the GOG version of the game is not compatible with NS4.

You legally own the game => You have a legal CD key => You can legally download a copy for your own use? I think thats how it works. DARAL!
