Crashing in earth plane

Hey,

Last week or so my pure fighter Whapper has been whappin stuff in earth plane with no probs til the last couple days. On first map(the above ground one) I've crashed 2-3 times now while fighting an Earth Guardian. I rarely crash, so it seems a bit odd that it would happen so frequently on the same map, vs. the same creature. Thanks in advance for looking into it:)

Typically local crashes are exactly that, a local issue. If you are the only player with a crash problem in an area, as it appears in this situation, then the problem is going to be something with your PC on your end.

A few suggestions I can make are:
1) Try different (updated) video card drivers
2) Try different (updated) sound drivers
3) If still having problems, try changing your sound device in the game sound options to a different 'device
4) Change video settings one at a time to see if one of the options you have turned ON has an issue. Turn em off 1 at a time and see if it fixes the crash

I would be the first to agree that it was something on my end if I hadn't gotten my last 4 levels on earth plane before the crashing started. There's no updates available, but I guess I'll try tinkering with my video stuff and see if something changes. I sure hope it's something on my end cuz it'll get to be an awfully expensive xp test if it's not

Yeah, same thing happened to me a while back. I fixed it by updating my video card drivers.

I've also had some other strange occurrences that would make me crash repeatedly. For the longest time I would crash any time I tried to open a loot bag containing the armor that the ogre raiders drop. That one was a pain, and I was going to reinstall drivers again, but the problem magically went away one day.

It really isn't too difficult to reinstall drivers anyway, so give it a shot.

Another thing that I have run into is the 'cached' maps that NWN uses become corrupt. For example, you go to the earth plane, 1st map over and over, and all is well. One day your computer crashes/freezes while loading the zone. NWN sees that map in the temporary location in your game folders, so it tries to use it every time... problem is that the temporary map has become corrupted and so you will crash on every attempt. The solution is to go to the folder where these maps are stored and delete all your temp maps there. That way, when you enter the zone the next time, it will download the map correctly from the server and fix your problem.

Similar things can happen to the files for portraits, armors, mcharacter models etc. If it is OEM content, you can often times find it on the web or even grab it and re-copy it from the CD/DVD and overwrite the corrupt versions that you have with the fresh versions.

Oh yeah, and if you have the most up-to-date drivers, consider rolling back to previous drivers. Personally, I find that my geforce 8800 GTS like drivers from Jan '08 best... even though there have been 4 or 5 releases since then.

Just a note about drivers, I had that issue last week as I've noticed a lot of drivers are updating for Windows 7 and even though they say they are fine for Windows 7, XP, Vista, etc., its been my experience, they are not.

I was crashing a lot ever since these new drivers came out. I'm back to factory settings and my computer couldnt be better.
