6th Street is the mecca for live entertainment.
For those of you who have never been...picture a length of "old town" type street about 3 blocks or so closed off to all but foot/bike traffic. Now picture maybe 30-40 bars/clubs split on either side of the street. Add free admission for almost all of them, some street shows, a few vendors, an f'in kickass spraypaint artist on the north side of the street, some mounted police and thousands of your closest friends (and strangers), and you've got an insanely entertaining evening every weekend.
To top it all off the live music is bar none. There's a reason Austin is dubbed "Live Music Capital".
I did 3 years of duty @ Fort Hood, about an hour and a half north. Every Fri or Sat we'd load up and have a blast. If you ever visit the city, you MUST stop by on a Fri or Sat night. Bring your cash though: even though the bars are free, the booze is far from cheap.
Damn, you're making me get all sentimental and s**t. Almost makes me want to take a long weekend down there for ol' times sake.
