I know this isn't a role-playing server, but I still enjoy doing it when possible. However, with the shout, tell, and party channels in the game, how to reconcile within role-playing boundaries?
For shout, I equate it with paying a bunch of town criers to announce the message across the Realm. Everybody hears it, if thier paying attention or care to.
For tells, that is a messenger who travels however far to personally deliver a message from the sender.
Party channels are either a messenger (for long distances), or a sort of hand signals thing that would allow a party to talk without others close by understanding.
Obviously, the DM channel is the prayer channel.
Now, for out-of-character messages and comments, the channels are exactly what they are. But, thinking of them in a role-playing manner allows me to use them without ruining the atmosphere of playing a fantasy role-playing game.

It is a little sad that the channels are so disruptive for anyone who wants to RP, without rationalizing it, but your reasoning isn't so bad
.
Personally, since we are in a DnD universe, I'd chalk party chat up to some sort of scry/counter scry device -- it tells you party member location, health, and lets you communicate with them no matter the distance.
Tells are the personalized version of above.
Shout's a little tougher, but having positted above that we've all got scrying stones, shout is just the ability for one person to communicate with all possible receivers simultaneously.
But, hey, since we're in DnD, I usually use the single most powerful DM B.S. word ever ---- Magic! Bam, all problems solved

i chalk it all up to a magic stone infused with the power to talk to anyone you want at any time....its flat and shows dots where your freinds are....has buttons on the side to determine who you want to listen to you...looks alot like a modern day walkie talkie or cell phone. oh this glorius magical stone what would we do with out you.
