I am a player who has been around with many characters including lvl 25 s before the vault-wipe. At that time I went to NS 3.5 East to try playing that server until NS4 was going good again. What I found at NS 3.5 East were fabulous DMs who hosted fun, non-invasive events that were fair to all and ENHANCED the gaming experience.
I liked the pace of NS4 and the map setup as well so I decided to come back to NS4 and join my spouse in play here. Upon coming back to NS 4 however, the whole experience had changed.
I was finding myself being involved in a nice party doing our own thing, only to be locked in an area (amazons) and charged $ by the Avendell Watch to be able to leave or get back into the temple. The big boulders placed to block our paths I'm sure did nothing to help decrease lag.
All players opted for the PK by our group just to get back to Avendell to be able to play again and then our Tank took the hit for all of us by the traps that were also set at 100 hp a shot. He lost the xp for us. This broke up the party because it discouraged some players and they logged. Mandatory DM trapping of a "singled out" party would not be a DM event and is not conducive to enjoyable play.
I've also had dealings with a DM player who logs on and kills my lowest lvl character and then on shout he calls ME a crybaby. So I mention that I was trying to learn how to play that class and it has been 3 pks in one day ... then it looks as if he logs to the client as the Avendell Watch and tells me that I should be quiet. I'm sorry but this is not conducive to an enjoyable environment and I feel that it is very immature.
I've also logged on and suddenly had all of the animals be on neutral for several hours. I know that this would most deffinately help power level a nice PK toon for someone but in other situations it is detremental to some players. (Those who have thier summons attacking for example)
Just seems to me that suddenly this server is losing its reputation over some pretty silly things, and when there are discussions directed at them...the discussions suddenly become locked.
I would really like to enjoy the mechanics as well as the maps of this server again as well as the NS 3.5 E site. Hats off to all DMs for putting in their time but can we take a look at who is creating the problems here and maybe correct some? Remember..there may be other players who just may be in a position to donate new servers or, time, or be able to cover costs also if they are allowed to enjoy the server...

What has happened to NS 4?
This kind of thing has happened to me too. Its really annoying and I dont think its a good "puzzle" at all.
and the dm you are refering to (if its the same one)has done stuff like that to my party and letting people know over IRC does nothing. Its sadening. My recommendation is to find another server or just learn to deal with it. I play on this server a lot and its only happened once. So its not like its a huge problem. Just try to let it go, no server is perfect.
on the same note I've had a lot of fun with the DM's logging level 40 toons and going after me. but I tend to make builds who can hold their own. A person new to the game would just get slaughtered. He should back off once you tell him you dont want to do PvP. This goes for all players he broke no rules pking you, its just annoying. If you ask someone nicely to not pk your lowbie usually they do so.
My suggestion is to send a PM to Deputy Dog or a different dm and explain everything that happened. get screenshots.

I appreciate the response. I agree with you about dealing with it or finding another server. I just want this one to remain as well liked as it has been in the past and am more worried about other players just coming in than I am myself. I really did not post to cause a gripefest, or to be a "crybaby". I will probably continue to play. I'd just like to see that these issuse don't turn into player abusing.
