Question from a new player on pking - clarification?
Question from a new player on pking - clarification?
I have read the rules on pk and I think I have a decent feel for how the faction system is intended to work. I guess I just wasn't sure whether we should or should not be pre-emptively pking other factions on sight outside our home areas.
Today I was in Avendell and on the same screen as another faction player. I stepped out of the gate and then so did he. Immediately upon spawning, he began to attack me and pk'd me about 60m outside the gate. I understand that technically I was outside Avendell, and he explained to me after that the pk was because we was of an opposed faction. He was really nice about it and seemed to be geniunely doing it for the role play aspect, so it's cool. I'm not really mad or anything - i've been pk'd before by unprovoked players, and I thought they were just being jerk griefers, but I suppose it's possible they may have been "role playing" the faction.
So my question is this: should I be autoattacking on sight anyone that is not of my faction? It seems like an awfully difficult condition to try and explore and test out the beta under if I keep having to respawn twenty maps back and walk all the way back to where I was exploring. No lost xp or gold, but what a tremendous waste of my time when i'm trying to play the beta and find bugs etc - especially when there are so few travel options.
This seems especially unwelcoming to new players like me who aren't expecting it - most of the time i'm passing red players and they don't do anything other than say hello to me. If we should be paranoid and pk everyone we see, it would be nice if it was clear that we ought to be doing so and should not behave socially toward anyone other than our own faction members.
Anyhoo, this is a great server and I hope all the beta issues get sorted out to come out of beta and go prime time.

Roleplaying
It's a preference. Some players/characters will kill an enemy faction on sight while others tend to let them pass. It's just different playing styles. As always while passing an enemy faction be wary. Sometimes a simple hello is disarming enough to an enemy player that he won't attack but that doesn't always work either. Some players don't let anything pass them by without at least attempting a PK. So it's always best to just be on your toes until you know who you can and can't trust in these matters. Goodluck and happy leveling.
After a while playing on NS4, you'll get a feel for the areas where you run a higher risk for being killed: in an enemy city (especially Neversummer if you aren't Last Alliance), on the Silver Road, in the Dark Forest, on Giant Mountain and the paths up it, and in the epic areas of Frostdale/Sunken Isle/Amazon City. If you're not in those areas, it's much more likely that 1) The other player will be leveling also and won't take the time to attack, 2) They know that you are leveling and attacking isn't all that fun, or 3) It's much more likely that they are in your faction anyways since the out of the way places are more homogenous than the highways of the world.
But don't be discouraged by the random nature of PKing... the very first day I ever played NS back in the mists of time, I got wasted a good half-dozen times as players raided Daeron all day long. I couldn't even get from the shard to the smithy without being killed... good times, good times

yeah, the first 5 months of beta if you were caught in opposing land you had better watch ur back cuz it was going to have something in it. as the influx of newer players have come only the "old" school players really get into factional disagreements and random killing. just watch out and be wary, you'll make it thru alright.
as for the beta testing....i'll be suprised if you find any bugs that haven't been know about for a year.

Generally I only pk if it's a guild enemy, or if I feel like hogging XP. Otherwise, I'll tend to invite players to share the XP since XPing is faaster in a group. Naturally, I will hit anyone in NS City who isn't LA. Anyone raiding a city should be prepared for the possibility of being pked.
As for Avendell, the rule of thumb as I understand it is not to camp within sight of the gate, presumably so the people coming through the transition aren't hit before there screen changes to the new zone or something. At least, I consider that to be fair enough.

Yes, the whole PK system is really confusing. Some hostile faction people will walk by and say hi, some will hunt you down no matter what the level difference (yes I am looking at you Nomius, you've done it to me 3 times), and those that try to roleplay it to the best of their abilities. When I first started playing ns4 I was always paranoid, then as I realized most people were the "hi person I should be killing", I kinda didn't worry as much. Just don't complain in shouts if you get PKed (use tells if the guy was rated impossible to you or something), and if you're a drow and you see a dwarf don't say "hi, how you doin'?" Try to kill the #@%!#%! Lets try to roleplay it here, thats what makes ns4 so interesting.

Thank you for the clarification. This was one of the pieces of information I was looking for.lordshelt wrote:yeah but as posted in many other threads the immediate area outside avendell gates is still considered avendell.
I have pretty much zero interest in PVP - at least the pk system on NS doesn't penalize people in xp and gold for being pk'd, so I figure griefers/role players who want to pk me will eventually get bored of pking someone who isn't going to bother fighting back and I really don't suffer a lot of hardship if I save at the right rift.
Maybe because the world itself is engaging and a good majority of the players here dont equate PvP with Arena. We are lucky in that while PvP does happen and is part of the world, that most of our players dont see the ability to enter into PvP means that they MUST enter into PvP.

Also, it's one of the best designed PWs I've ever seen for NWN. I'm not a diehard pker myself, but I enjoy this server more than any others I've seen.
