Increase stability

Post by Donan »

In an effort to create a more stable environment I thought it a good idea to confirm or dismiss some theories. Everyone enjoys the game more with less lag (i'm sure you needed me to tell you that) so from what I understand the following should not only reduce lag for everyone but also lower the workload on the server.

If you drop an item on the ground, anywhere that item will remain until it is picked up or the server resets. I believe this causes 2 problems. The server now has to track all these items left all over the areas and increases workload. Any areas that someone did this will respawn at a slower pace. I want to stress I am talking about an item u pick up then drop on the ground, basically anything other then those marked “remains”.

I always try to pick up anything left around no matter how useless and do 1 of 2 things with it. I either sell, obviously, or I find a loot pile i.e. “remains” and actually place the item inside it, so when I leave area and it resets the items are gone.

I hope I explained myself correctly. If I am wrong please let me know so I won’t bother picking up other peoples garbage and throwing it out, if I am right I don’t think this is to much to ask to improve the game for all.

p.s. I believe NS has trash cans for this specific purpose and assume they will be available in all cities in the future.

I've made it a point of picking up stuff I see not disappearing, then tossing it into a remains somewhere down the road, it's a good idea.

I had hoped to get some more responses so I thought to bump the topic back up. If anyone knows whether what I stated above is correct or not a response would be appreciated.

Even if you have another way to play that will reduce crashes, lag, etc it would be appreciated.

Yes, always pick up gear that is dropped. It remains there until resets. Since most people play LA, make use of those magic trash cans. I'm not quite sure why they are not more prevalent than they are...
But, it's such a draining job that, until you've DMed on an NWN server yourself, you the playerbase, have got to cut the DMs some slack. - Flailer

its less cpu intensive to let the item stay then to put a timer on it.

The database tracks the item so it does go away when the area despawns. So is not that intensive. Same as tracking the spawn .

Cleanup is good., Or just throw trash into the corpse of a critter..

These cpus are big dogs that run nice and lean so until we get 60 players active at all times, dont sweat it.

When I go into a shop and see items dropped on the floor (usually stuff people don't have the level to equip yet, and so they just drop them instead of putting them back), I pick them up and walk out the door. That quickly removes all of them from the game at once.
