How does level adjustments work?

How do the level adjustments work. Dop you just get less XP or what?

if your level 1 and you have an ecl of +2 you get the xp of a 3rd level char so

1 + 2 = 3
at second it would be 4 and so on.

If your level adjustment is +2, is your lvl cap 38 or 40??

No you will still be able to obtain level 40....

I just want to know for sure that killing a cr9 while at level 1 with a ecl +2 will give you full xp of what a true 3rd level character would get or would you get the xp a true level 1 would get (i.e. the xp from the cr9 drops to the bonus a cr7 would give...)?

(Hope that question makes sense)

In the upper and lower cap of what you will get exp for, ECL is considered. So you should get exp from a cr 9 as if you where level 3 and not 1
