Not Your Typical Lag Post!!!

I am sure everyone has lag, it is a problem on any internet system. I am curious what others do to help drop the problem on their end??

I have a AMD 2400+
GeForce 4 128MB Video Card
1GB of RAM
Windows XP Pro

Not top end but not bottom of the heap either.

I am on DSL and am only 300-350 Yards from the Server (I live in a small town and the phone office is two blocks away and only 1 if you follow the phone lines. My house is not quite 2 years old so it is new cable and such. What are some tips from other players or even the devs that can help me eliminate as much of the lag on my end as possible. Thanks to everyone who answers and if you need any more info let me know.

I remember reading a post on the bioware forums about how little the client end computer does to cause lag. Lowend machines can have choppy gameplay but they don't cause server lag. People with slow internet connections also don't contribute noticably to lag. It's more about large parties, large groups gathering in one place, expensive scripts, etc.

Yeah it's usually game effects that cause this.

Casters do alot especially when casting on big groups of enemies with extravagant spells. Ie druid's Stonehold or spells like wiz/sorc's horrid wilting.

I turn all the eye candy off, but jack the anisitropic filtering. Game looks nice and sharp, but less video lag.

Anisotropic filtering has to do with making textures clearer as they proceed into the distance. Want more than that? Go check out a site devoted to 3d gaming performance or video card hardware. :)

Anisotropic filtering (AF) is a feature of some video cards that sharpens the details of the fading-away part of a 3D object that recedes into the distance. Think of the text in the titles at the beginning of the Star Wars movies that is presented in large letters and then scrolls back into the distance. As it scrolls off, it becomes fuzzy and hard to read. In a 3D image, you may want a comparable effect to retain the sharpness of an object as it recedes; anisotropic filtering does this. (Isotropic describes objects or image elements with vectors of equal value along different axes, such as squares and cubes. Anisotropic describes objects whose vectors are unequal, such as trapezoids and parallelograms.)

After playing my game in 2xQ Antialiasing I can't leave it off. The game just looks too choppy

Also, there are still lots of memory holes in NWN itself as a game. I have experienced "memory lag" in which I do things, and things get lagged up because my RAM memory is being drained by the memory holes that haven't been fixed in 1.62

Wait for 1.63 to see if anything changes on that end

Anisotropic realy means "non-uniform shape". But everyone uses it as a term, instead of a name =o
The videocard will try to smooth out the textures, align them properly, etc

also... Lag has very little to do with your computer system. Lag (Latency) is the time it takes a packet to go from your computer, to the server, and back again. If you notice sometimes when you move your character stumbles back a bit... or when he stops moving he sorta spins around for a second... all kinds of annoying lag things

but if you are like me... then you have a FPS problem =(
Celeron (500 MHz)... GeForce2mx... = bad framerate =( choppy gameplay... lots of action usualy means lots of respawning =(

SO if it is a FPS problem is there a way to fix that? Is my system already that far out of date?

You might just want to find some tweaking sites. You're running a system thats a bit slower than mine (only by processor) and I run the game pretty fast even with antialiasing and anisotropic filtering on. I load areas faster than anyone I know.

Well I recently have had to reformat and reinstall everything on my hard drive. I will definately start looking at these tweak sites. I am seriously thinking of just buying a new processor as well but before I do that I am going to see what can be done before spending any money. (Read I am a cheap Bas***d! eheheh I have three Kids!) Any sites better than any others or is it a basic take your chances kind of thing.
