This is a message for the DMs
I don't know how else to contact so here it is.
Since April Fools Day, a couple of us have been experiencing quite a bit of lag and crashing.
I've been playing for over 18 months and never had it happen until now.
It is not unusual to crash 3-4 times within an hour for no apparent reason, also trans not appearing between maps and having to log to get them to reappear, 10 sec delayed action to name a few.
I have lost xp being killed and lost a substantial amount of coin and gear while transferring on several occasions due to extended periods of lag. I have checked all my connections this side and even tried 3 other servers and found no problem there.
After speaking with others over the last two weeks it seems I am not the only one having this problem.
I don't know if this is this servers problem or if you are even aware this is happening, perhaps you can enlighten me?
I love playing here but this is making it impossible when i spend nearly all my time relogging to get from one map to another or to get out of a freeze or a crash.

For all of those experiencing unusual lag lasting more than 30 seconds, please send a pm to me with the following information:
1) The exact time you experienced the lag.
2) Approximately how long the lag lasted.
3) Your external IP address.
4) A traceroute to ns4.nsrealm.com.
NOTE: It's VERY important that you perform the traceroute AS THE LAG IS HAPPENING. So practice now so you'll know how to do it when the lag hits.
To obtain your external IP address, you can go to http://www.whatismyip.com
Instructions on how to use traceroute can be found here:
Linux/*BSD:
Code:
traceroute ns4.nsrealm.com

Re: Lag April 2011
Check your ports on both your instances. (if you dual log)
I've been getting minor lag but really notice a difference when certain dual loggers are on. I could only guess its a port issue. I play on a single box and linux auto-manages the ports for both my instances.
Really the lag has been quite managable for me. Minor and infrequent but my online time is 1am EST -6amEST and its been pretty lag free

Interesting - if you can confirm this / have an inkling, I'd be very much interesting in checking ports.Alkapwn wrote:Check your ports on both your instances. (if you dual log)

Re: Lag April 2011
Don't see port choice being a problem server side, don't think we have any server specific traffic messing-around-with-stuff going on (perhaps somewhere in the local network). The only thing we do on the server is host ns4 and some dev related crap that's low impact and not accessed constantly.
I think most intertubez stuff is opaque to port (barring ISPs that mess with you), know it's pretty hard to test things in a port specific manner. Well not hard, but the results aren't meaningful or something like that (there's flags in ping for port/protocol).
ETA: Be sure to check for the little known sources of client lag. Chat/combat messages have something wonky in the caching, when there's a ton of info there, it'll cause issues. Also taking arrow hits with elemental damage: some sort of leak in vid memory, it clears on other objects when they disappear or you leave the area, but not on your character. And there's others... and the game network code is a pile of crap anyway...
