Character build contests

Post by Lokey »

Toying with the idea. So what kind of set-up, rewards, etc... seem worthwhile?

For a first run I was thinking along the lines of "Decent first character a newbie can use--that's someone new to NS, not to NWN entirely."
- Would be playable in a large number of factions.
- Not die instantly most places.
- Would usually have something effective to do.
- Isn't too specifically gear dependent.
- Good at most levels.
- Major parts of build actually work in game :)
- Ballpark figures: 500hp, mid60s ac, mid60s ab if primarily melee, base saves around 35+ including long term buffs but not short duration abilities. Doesn't need to meet all of them, but would need a pretty good reason not to.
Things to keep in mind: all factions have bard, cleric, fighter, most PrCs.

For a first run, wouldn't think any in game prize would be needed. Maybe Tep will be forced to post something complementary about it and its creator :) I'd rather not deal with secret submissions, just start a builds for x go here thread, and add a little weight to a concept that was posted first, leave that open for a week or two. Winners would go into a sticky thread somewhere.

So how's that sound?

I like it.

I like the idea only if I get awesome prizes that make me better than everyone else, becuase I'll need every advantage I can get once people start pvping against me with my own builds :P

Description:

This build is the best at doing the worst in Epic runs and PVP. It can set traps, but thats about it.
I would suggest using level 1 gear on this guy, because anything else is a waste.
Important buffs are scrolls/wands of expeditious retreat if you can get them-running away is about all you can do.
If you see a shadowdancer, and it HiPSes, run away. If it doesn't, you're dead anyway, so run away.

Mining your suggested format seems rather long. I suggest we could usually do without the 40 lines of what skills to take at each level.

And how dare you steal my next build. Only thing you changed was taking heal instead of taking ride like I am. If you have the time to heal you can rest anyway, it's all about the expeditious retreat. And riding stuff is just.....AWESOME!
Confusion is just a state of mind.

Hehe and what vegetable would spend no skill points till lvl 40?

Love the idea Lokey, and know exactly the build to recomend, its the same that I currently advise all new players on.

How detailed do you want? Simple lvl progression or something as detailed as Minings?

Don't want to look at a bunch of that :) It depends on how complex the build is.

A list of final skills noting which if any are taken cross-class would be fine.

I'd say if skills meander through levels, i.e. at 1 take xyz, every level take disc and spellcraft, dump 3 into perform at 23, etc., then a detailed 40 liner, but if its 1 / level, then a skills block.

How does this sound for a contest:

Best build for new players:
Judged by: the Devs and DMs.

Goals:

No books
Lower ECL is better
Viable
Has a means of survival
Has a means to inflict damage
Can compete in pvp and pvm
Has respectable saves
Functions well enough with IA, skara, dorfs or crafted gear
Able to be made in nearly every faction

There are players who are nice enough to accept gold/etc. to help a new player, thus an option. But yeah, I agree. Crafted is the 'well, everything else sucks' option.

Set up a little contest then. This was a good idea, but I was waiting on a dm or dev to set up some definitive rules and a prize, which never happened.
