While it's annoying, look on the bright side — at least we have an active dev team here that can work on fixes. Besides, when the server does start crashing repeatedly like this, I'll often try a different server until the problem's been stabilized.

How about next time the server crashes and anyone loses xp, all the characters on at the time are automatically advanced to level 40?

If that don't fix everything, nothing will.

wipe the server and give everybody an ecl +10.

No one will ever gain xp or items to lose!
