So, just to clear things up too, is just a high listen or a high spot score necessary to detect an SD or both of them? I've been boosting one of them high and the other one not at all hoping that I'll be able to detect stealthy folks so I can turn them into little shadowdancer cinders...

If you can cast True-Seeing (+20 spot) and/or Claudiance (+10 spot/listen), then pump Spot through the roof as you want it to get REAL high.

If you can't cast those spells then you're going to have problems with the uber-shadowdancers/rogues.

Also nab yourself a helm with +7 spot. I've come across two. Buff wisdom as well and take out epic skill focus when you can.

Not sure about how you can pump Listen so damn high!

Only one of them is needed. Some classes, such as Bard or Monk, only have listen but are able to detect jsut fine. The burden is on the "stealth" user to be prepared for either check by putting skills into both hide and move silently.

As for Zhorn, you have just reassured me that anytime I meet you before you reach lvl 35-40 I will always be able to beat your spot.

Thanks.

Well it's a good thing you're not on my $#@#-list then :)

And no that's not an excuse to try to get on it!

I'd hate to have to limp around in "Detect mode" to push it that little bit higher /LOL

Who says all shadowdancers are evil? ;)

I'm not and I use it to compensate for my relatively low AC nothing more. It comes in handy when you're being pummeled in melee and need to cast a heal spell or use a kit to avoid dropping. I use it as I would an invisibility powder/spell albeit I move slower :)

I have used it to sneak past guards or lesser NPC's to hit named NPC's or get to the missile troopers and spellcasters.

Sure there are nasty shadowdancers who mainly prey on spellcasters but that aint my thing I have no need to take on players. So far I'm friends with many players and I enjoy being able to solo knowing I can disappear when things get too tough for me.

This is my first char with HIPS and I quite enjoy playing a vulnerable character that needs to use guile and stealth to get the upperhand.

dont complain that its too hard for a cleric to get high spot... clerics are truly overpowered already. if you want to kill HipS rogues then build a character for killing rogues, why does everyone just pick cleric and then complain when it doesnt blanket-own every other class

HipS is bloody annoying but its fun to fight against. remove it and you remove alot of fun, both for the HipS addicts, and for people that enjoy a hard fight

And yeh, limiting HipS to once per round would be great, it would stop the kiddies that hit/hide/hit/hide/hit/hide constantly

I had thought that if you exited combat for any reason (i.e. to hide), you couldnt attack until the beginning of the next round...is this not so?

yup it's limited in the way you're explaining

I also believe that the target has a chance of striking the player coming out of hiding before the hips-er gets his attacks, but you gotta have good initiative to get first hit.

that could be interesting... if you get an initiative roll when you are attacked from the shadows, it would be cool to see some clerics with horrible spot but insane initiative... at least something new and interesting

Clerics with insane initiative, that'll be the day ... most of em gimp dex to 8 and wear plate, so they get -1 to initiative from the dex.

I'm not sure it works like that . . . .

Coming out of shadows is supposed to give you a sneak attack, the very definition of which leaves no room for the opposing party to respond in an initiative roll way. I think it could be parried? but from what I've seen, I roll init after hit by a HiPSing char.
