PC LVL 8's using Summon IX scrolls?

Was just in a fight with a dwarf when the dirty little bugger whipped out a scroll and summoned an Elder Elemental.

Wouldn't be so bad except I was level 7 at the time and he showed up as very difficult.

I think there should be concentration requirements on scrolls or something, that's just too unbalanced to be summoning stuff like that at such low levels.
I'd go so far as to call it an exploit.

In PnP using a scroll like that requires a caster level check.

d20+caster level=caster level required to cast spell (in this case 17) then spell goes off. If not it fails. Scroll isn't used up unless it goes off or you roll a 1 on caster check in which case something bad happens. It would be cool if on a 1 the spell goes off and if offensive, affects you, if defensive, you take damage = d6x spell level. If it's a summon have it appear and attack the caster.

eh...simplest is to just have the caster take d6 x spell level of the scroll.

I think that would be a good change.

*edit* I don't think you can call that an exploit...it's the way the engine has always worked and was presumably how it was intended to work by Bioware.

They made it so a rogue, with UMD 30+ can't use lvl 1 scrolls. But wizard, sorc and bard can use lvl 9 summons at lvl 1. Obviousla a bug.

And no, it isn't Bioware, it's NS4 code!

UMD if it's high enough and you make the roll should let you use anything pretty much.

The broken rogue UMD thing is NS4 scripting. A PC with 1 lvl of cleric able to use a summon IX spell is Biocode.

The scroll was random treasure that spawned with him. Our mobs sometimes use the things they spawn with so you never know when something like that may happen.

This was a PC not a mob that summoned the Elder Elemental.
I was level 7 and he appeared as Very Difficult towards me.

sounds kind of uneven in the level restrict fairness. maybe scrolls should be lvl restrict like everything else in the game. fear the warrior

Devs, is the plan currently to introduce some kind of DC to cast spells from scrolls that an arcane or divine caster would not be able to cast naturally due to level?

so a fighter type with 1 level in wiz, bard, or sorc enables you to use ALL scrolls? thats pretty wild.

well so far the chars ive played more than one night can all use scrolls, but i was unaware of that feature

Isn't it a bit cheesy that a lvl 1 wizard can run around invisible with a IX summon massacring "impossible" foes with abandon? It's a sound tactic, and one that I have enjoyed using purely to skip those early wizzie levels, but I am not certain that it's much different than a lvl 1 using lvl 20+ gear.

ahh,

Lokey is rewroking the UMD and spell scroll currently so that should be fixed in the near future.
