Use of shout?
Use of shout?
I was just booted because I told an Okie that stealin a relic is just part of the server...then when he asked me not to steal it..I said "Okie I left you your relic" That was all I said on shout. I got booted for this.
This was on a totally separate toon and concerning a totally separate incident than I had dealt with a DM about (In tells) earlier in the evening.
This is wrong and a God saying on shout "You have been warned child" does not let someone know that they are specifically being singled out nor does it tell them what for.
Other players SPAM shout for hours with people BEGGING to get them off and dont get booted.
I understand that shout is not for public insults but this was not the case, nor was there anything said pertaining to anything other than relics....
Is shout banned now as a community service concerning relics?

I would like to add that there has been a distinct shift towards this kind of censorship and man-handling of the shout channel which borders on totalitarian.
It's seems amusing that you never hear a peep from the DM's/Gods when we have certain long-standing players (brethren in particular) who incessantly spam crap on shout, antagonising all players new and old and those calls for action are ignored. But wait when there is some honest tom-foolery and pleasant jest we are "naughty children" *dripping sarcasm*.
It is crystal clear what the intent of a shouted message is and it's tone. Please show players respect as well it works both ways. Consistency is the key here.
If you punish off-topic friendly banter on shout then you must also punish calls for swapping of gear or "anyone help with a xfer" or "where do I find x or how do i get to y"?
It's starts becoming a bit difficult to police. No?
This is not an attack on DM's - i see it as constructive feedback that ALL DM's are entitled to view as just that!

You have unfortunately grossly misrepresented what happened (I have the screenshots).Poet wrote:I was just booted because I told an Okie that stealin a relic is just part of the server...then when he asked me not to steal it..I said "Okie I left you your relic" That was all I said on shout. I gave the usual warning about keeping such things in tells or in party chat.
I even added that "the Gods are getting angry about this" - another shout from you followed immediately. I let it pass, since I reasoned that you were typing this before my 'follow up' warning.
Then a few minutes later, you shouted again when you should have used tell.
This need not be discussed more, child. Continue on your journeys.
*/edit: I also did the same for two others. All are equal in the eyes of the Gods. And Godly warnings should be heeded.

Not that any DM has to justify his/her decisions 'publicly' in forum concerning 'discipline', but I will say this (but will not name names): tonight, one player got the boot for ignoring a warning (and a follow-up warning) concerning shout; another got the boot for being snarky at a DM on shout after A) having been warned not to spam shout already on this night and B) having been previously warned concerning being snarky at DMs; and lastly, a third one got also a boot for using shout instead of tell after having received warnings previously.Okie GET wrote:if all things are equal, then try booting havok's spamming butt occassionally. and you need to relax about shout... there was no harm in him typing that one line. i don't think he grossly misrepresented things at all.
(oh - and I have all the screenshots which show exactly how it all went down - including from past 'conversations').
Using shout to ask questions, in rping, events, raids (raising alarms) and such - this is not a problem.
Any thing else should stay in party chat or tells (taunts, saying silly things, reactions after PvP, regular conversation, etc.).
Is this so hard?

I dont know about everyone else but the new DM Mentrarch does not seem to me understand the server rules. Im not going to get into specifics but ive heard from alot of other players on the server that this is not the first time he has tried to enforce rules that do not exist. I know you are a DM Mentrarch but try reading the Neversummer Commandments before you go around Banning people. You are just going to drive ppl away from the server.
Im not saying this to come down on you, im just saying this in the best interest of the server. its grown alot in the last couple of months. Ive been hearing stories and alot players are feeling abused. So if we wanna keep ppl on the server please make sure you are banning them or warning them for rules that exist.

I will not comment on the specifik case, since I know to little about it.
However generally speaking it is not uncommen or unreasonable for us to ask you to stop using shout . Here are a few reasons why I've asked players to take it to tells. talk or party chat in the past.
1) Its a conversation between 2 persons, why does the whole server needs to hear that then? take it to tells and keep it between you.
Ofcouse when someone asks a question on shout, its justified to answer in shout since others might have the same question, however once the initial question is answered, take it to tells if the player still wants some more information about it.
2) Sometimes its just to prevent the conversation from taking a turn down the wrong road, so we jump in and ask you to take it to tells before it gets that far.
Rule of thumb. If it doesn't concern (almost) the whole server, don't shout it.

@ Netrom: Fair call on point 2 of your post with respect to taking things to tell.
I agree it is a judgment call when you can forsee some nastiness developing from the tone of a shout and rightly ask that it go to tells (becomes private) otherwise you get a public slanging match where other vested interests become involved which serves no one.
However it appears that from some of the angst projected towards certain DM Styles, there needs to be a new set of rules or updating of old ones - latest news sticky perhaps.
The reason I joined this debate is I have been on the server a very long time and this "crack down" came out of the blue and has bent some noses out of place.
If there is a sticky I have missed about changes to shout in the last few weeks, I apologise for not searching more thoroughly. If not then it comes down to differing expectations between players and respective DMs which can be sorted out with clarification.
Cheers

That is not in agreement with the server rules posted on the website or in the Neversummer journal about the useage of Shout. The only speech that is officially restricted is that which is obscene/harassing/objectionable. A few lines on shout does not harassment constitute.Any thing else should stay in party chat or tells (taunts, saying silly things, reactions after PvP, regular conversation, etc.).

Anything involving more than two people can't be done in tell, at least not without standing around acting afk rather than, you know, playing and having fun. If it's taken to party chat, then you end up with parties spread all over the server, increasing lag, especially if the participants are already in a few active parties... to talk, they'd have to get into a single very large party.
I enjoy an active shout channel... it's part of why NS4 feels more like a community than just a random game server. Dead shout = boring, especially if I'm with a party that's not very chatty.
