Beetle queen quest.

Post by Maankin »

I'm new to NWS4.
For my first character I chose a dwarver fighter, later to be multiclased to cleric. When the choice came to join an alliance I naturally joined the dwarves and found myself a few seconds later in the dwarven halls. After 2 days of meeting noone I finally met a friendly person in the Black hills that told me to go to Avendell when I hit level 5. Therefore I went back to the halls to gain some strength and continued my job quests (kill the rats, kill the beetles, etc.).
The last quest that was given to me is the "kill the beetle queen quest".
As I am level 5 (F/Cl 4/1) I entered the mines to seek out the queen.
My AC is 22 as I have only standard equipment, I have 66 HP and my AB is 7, so I have no problem with the normal beetles and other things I was assigned to kill. Following what I had experienced on the sever I thought this might be tough , but nothing I could not handle.
When I reached the lair I saw the queen was guarded by 2 warrior beetles.
I lured one away so I could give it my full attention without being attacked from the rear. I died in 20 seconds with the warrior barely injured (my first death on the server :( ). So I said to myself: bad luck, try again. Second time I escaped near dead and the beetle injured. Third time, fourth time, fifth time - different tactics - same story. The warriors have AB 11, 2 attacks, an AC of (I think) 25 and more hitpoints then a beetle should have.
The point of this rant is that I was following a standard but fun quest line to be halted by an impossible quest. I can't even get 1 warrior to badly wounded without dying. And for doing it in a party - it seems the dwarven halls aren't a popular place. I was following a series of quests that got gradually more difficult, but now the difficulty went through the roof.
I hope these warrior beetles could be toned down next time the server is updated.
I have given up on the quest (and my job path) for now and have started the search for Avendell (wherever it might be).

There's a map on the wiki... look there and plot your route to Avendell (you're very close to it already).

Most of the combat quests are pretty hard if you're doing nothing but the job quests. Do orcs until level 6.

Oh, and you *did* buy better gear from the Smithy at level 5, right?\

Base = 10
Dex = 1
Full plate +2 = 10
Tower Shield +2 = 6
You should have around AC 27 by now.

Thanks for the repies.
I'll check the wiki for the route. Thanks for the hint.
I didn't buy better gear at the smithy. The few times I entered it, there was no shopkeeper to be found. But I'll check it again, more carefull this time. I definately need an AC boost, and I have enough gold.

Starting from the Black Hills Inn, if you were to go East, then South, then East again, you end up on Silver Road. If you go north about a quarter of the map you'll get to the gates of Avendell.

Better gear is a must. Try going to the smithy (as well as the clothing shop for belts and amulets and the like) when they are open and see what you can use/afford.

As said above, get some better gear ;)

Raid some chests guarded by orcs in the black hills. You MUST make an honest effort to constantly increase your cash so you can keep affording to buy the next echelon of gear when you reach it. You're level 5, so you should already have been working on the money to buy your masterwork steel equipment. Just my 2 cents.

I somehow managed to always enter the smithy during nighttime - hence the plain equipment.
But I'm doing better now, I have +2 gear and I've found my way to Avendell, thanks to the map on the wiki.

Better gear is a must. But not only is +AC better, but get armor/shield with immunities to it. At one point, my level 6 cleric and my friends level 6 fighter could not even take a single gnoll near the Redhorn Pass. It was downright pathetic. After a valuable tip from a lone rogue, we went back to town, bought masterwork armor with slashing immunity/resists, and next thing we knew, we were blasting through gnolls like we were 5 levels higher. Better gear, thats what it's all about.

However, there is one thing that this brings up. Why is the Queen Beetle's CR 11 and the Orc Leader's 8? You do the Orc Leader after the Queen Beetle as well, its kinda weird.

yeah, i did the queen beetle quest at 5 and it was hella hard and took all the pots i'd collected, then a scant 1 level later i went and pwned Urgrock and his whole retinue using about 5 HKs.
