Don't break areas!

This is one of the biggest little things around here that annoys me. People who log when they die without respawning and break areas. It's just shows a complete lack of consideration for the next player or group of players who come by only to find the area broken.

As for the whole log to raise the dead, I'm not totally against that, but if you're going to do it, take the time to fix the area afterwards. Especially if you're in an area like Ice Giants, Amazons, or the Planes where there's a lot of XPing traffic and if you're going to be in the area for a while, you're messing up your own XPs.

This is not an issua to me, since I have no characters capable of resurrection, but I got curious. What is "to break an area"? What are the effects, and how can we fix it?

I would not blame anyone, as that can be a lot of XP to lose. When you break a map or find one, log out on that map with a live character (fully buffed & in a safe area if possible) for 2-3 minutes & then log that chararcter back in. It resets the map. Don't leave it broken for other players that may follow.

Added: There can't be any other players on the map when you log out, ask them to wait for you on the previous or next map.

Aye, any player who takes the time to log out and trigger the repopulate scripts (possibly the greatest update to NS4 ever) to help out others definitely gets a big thumbs up from me. If you come across a broken area but don't think A) you could survive logging/relogging, or B) it's too popular an area to think you could keep people out for the couple of minutes to trigger them with logging, you can always try to tell a DM on the DM channel about it; we have a tool to manually reset the area, and we can get everyone out manually as well to do it.

But still kudos to everyone nice enough to do it on the player side as well!

To answer Deicide's question. A broken area is one that does not spawn monsters/NPCs. An area becomes broken when a char is dead and logs out (Exits) the program while still dead in the area they died in. Areas may be fixed by a live char logging out from the area (only one in it), waiting 2-3 min and then logging in. I've done it in as little as 1 min and had it work. There was a post concerning this a while back, maybe we need it added to a sticky.

Well, yeah. I can understand that people would want to avoid losing XPs, especially up on the upper levels where the amount lost can be a lot to replace. But don't leave the area broken.

Instead of making a sticky about it, why not add it into the journal which every player has. Not eveyone reads the forums and to tell you the truth, this is new to me, as well.

I had though that "broken areas" had, had a fix in the server. I remember when respawning broke areas. Now I know different.

I specailly like the idea about one being able to fix the zone themselves by logging out and in with a live character.

Respawning used to break areas when we had multiple servers if you were saved to a different server then you died in. It was basically the same as if you died and logged because your character would "log" out of one server while dead and respawn in another. Giant Mountain was almost always broken because Avendell was on a different server then it.

Yup. Those were the days. Wasn't uncommon to find more than anyone's fair share of "broken" zones.

This is something that I once again experienced last night. I'm going to assume that it was caused by death logging because I did find non decade loot bags around. 3 low level zone in and around Menzo were broken. Hidden Legion Tunnels, the first Legion Tunnel leading out of Menzo and Underdark. Which made leveling life for my lowbie miserably slow.

I tried the "alive" log out - wait a few minutes - log back in, however, it did not work.

I don't have any suggestions for a fix other than DM's watching for accounts that log out dead and hope that one day a resolve might be found.

the logging dead problem has been resolved by not starting the server so you can't log out dead if your not logged in

Yes, I noticed problems with broken areas again last night. I was in the Duergar Castle, tried to fix it, and it didn't fix after I was logged for 8 minutes. I brought it to one of the DM's attention, and the DM manually fixed the area, however it only fixed the spawns. The doors in the castle were still open and the remains of previously killed monsters were still on the ground. I did keep the DM informed though, so I hope this already got back to the dev team.
