It was fun, but...
It was fun, but...
OK - I'm probably going to depart from NS - and am posting this not as a complaint - but as a "Here's what the Noob saw".
NS is a great idea, phenominal PW, lots of potential... but...
1) I screwed up. I forgot to read the fine print where it says that PW Action essentially means "Uber-Builds, Cheezy builds, and lack of RP required". I was thinking PW Action was more "RP with less standing around talking and more doing". My bad.
2) The Dev's have done a wonderful job creating a mod that goes a long way to balancing the effects of Uber Builds etc - but this means that you have to have an Uber Build to be "reasonably effective". Add the fact that I'm more of a soloist to the mix - and it's "Cheeze or Die".
3) Lack of "logic" in the mod. Call me fussy - but I can't get my head around metalic dragons and their evil cousins being all chummy. Look at the "King and Queen of Sleeth" - a Gold and a Red "Mated pair"????
4) "Wierd and wonderfull" weapons and items. I can understand the logic in changing the potions from "Potion of healing" to "Bubbly white goo" or whatever - but it makes "casual" gaming somewhat harder.
5) "Nerfed" stuff. I was somewhat stunned when I went to summon my familiar, and from what I've read there's been a lot of changes to what spells can and can not be used, and the effects of the aforementioned spells. Trying to actually find a definitive list though.... Maybe I'm just stupid. Anyway - it would be nice to know all the changes in advance of setting up a character.
6) Intensity. This mod is for the dedicated - not the casual. 5 levels of killing rats with my "non-Cheeze" character and I'm still not being capable of walking out the front gates of Sleeth without dying. I just don't have the dedication to keep killing rats to get strong enough to look around this world you've created.
7) Tension. You guys are just too serious! Look over the forum for the first time (as I have), and you see 95% "Boo hoo - we've got to do something about this because it's an exploit and I'm not using it so therefore it's unfair"; "Whine - the DM's are biased because they pick on me and I wasn't technically breaking any rules at that point in time"; "Moan - where is this thing for my faction as this other faction has this other thing which is better"; "Grumble, [censored], complain - I have no life and this constant drum-banging makes me feel important."
Seriously - it's a game. So, some things are "Not quite right" - unless you intend to hand the Dev's the solution (meaning you'll get off your sorry butts and learn how to mod yourself, write and test the code, and hand it over to the dev team for peer-review) - mention it, then shut up.
Anyway - good luck with it - and I wish you all the best. It's been.... interesting.

I deleted your post Aarkon. Wheather I agree with someone or not there is nothing wrong with posting your impression and constructive critism. Notice the word constructive.
It is to bad you are going Eldaric but like I always said if everyone liked the same things there wouldn't be so many different servers. Good luck in finding a place more suited to your playing style.

Some thoughts on your comments Sir.
Thanks for your feedback, the same to you.
This is the case on every online server I have ever played on that was worth a salt without actually having DM's run event 24 x 7. The majority of people will always want the 'best' build and will test thier toons extensively for the most effectiveness. For casual players this is tough, but don't hate those who dedicate time to the planning of thier toon. See next comment also.Eldaric wrote: 1) I screwed up. There is an anti-cheeze feature going into the mod very soon. As more epic content is added to the mod, the purer builds will reap the rewards.Eldaric wrote: 2) The Dev's have done a wonderful job creating a mod that goes a long way to balancing the effects of Uber Builds etc - but this means that you have to have an Uber Build to be "reasonably effective". Opposites attract? If you need this level of detail to aesthetics to enjoy a mod I sincerely wish you luck in your search.Eldaric wrote: 3) Lack of "logic" in the mod. This server is not really intended for casual '5 mins here and there' gaming. If you are interested in exploring, partying up with other players and having an adventure then you soon get used to the names.Eldaric wrote: 4) "Wierd and wonderfull" weapons and items. One of the problems new players often encounter is that they visit these forums AFTER their first 'suprise' that something wasn't exactly how they thought it was going to be.Eldaric wrote: 5) "Nerfed" stuff. Faction jobs should keep you entertained until level 9 or so for those who have them.Eldaric wrote: 6) Intensity. Recent admin action has been taken which will cut the vast majority of this out. Only so much tolerance can be given to those trouble making types.Eldaric wrote: 7) Tension. A valid point, but this server gets updated several times a week. We're always listening and improving.Eldaric wrote: Seriously - it's a game. Don't forget we're still a 'beta' right now also and massive numbers man-hours are going into getting us past that stage. In my opinion there was never a better time to be a player on this server - more adventures are always literally just around the next corner.Eldaric wrote: Anyway - good luck with it - and I wish you all the best. im siding on zing on this. devs are doing a great job, especially after the surge of more recent deving from flailer, zing and the rest.
and yeh, playstyle is really something unique to search for in every server. some ppl who leave find out to come back later on.
to eldaric, goodluck on finding another server but if you come back, try picking another faction to play with. other people are friendlier and are willing to help out

Being a NS newbie myself I feel I don't know enough yet to really comment on most of the above.
One exception though. I too would like to see a (more) definitive list of class and spell changes. There is some info on animal companions, summoning and shifters, but that's about it and there are obviously a great deal more changes in both spells and classes.
It basically means as a newbie you get to make a screwed up character first with which you learn about NS and then you can make a 'real' one....
Even though you can't eliminate something like that entirely of course, it just doesn't sound quite right. A bit more info on things that have been altered would be very appreciated

Like any world, the idea was that new players should probably start out in Last Alliance and do a melee class as they learn the world.
We do need a real spell list, but the time to actually write that all down at this point is very daunting indeed.
Maybe some players could get together and submit it as a researh project for some rewards?

well I agree with most of what he said the Red and Gold dragon mated pair AO thing is in my opinion screwy
im old school and i notice a lot of other players on this server are shall we say mature ppl. I played 1st, 2nd edition D&D and all i can say is this goes against every thing i have ever read about the game and dragons. It just wouldnt and shouldnt happen they r mortal enemies to each other O and while on this a paladin wouldnt be caught dead in sleeth really slavery goes against everything a paly stands for but anyways im ranting bout that lol
The new players not knowing much is half there own fault i say it again and i hope you do it at your new server .... read as much of the forumns as u can before you even start making your 1st character .... having said that ppl need to know all the changes spells, familiars, feats that dont work right or u just cant have (dev crit) etc and im getting sick of the shout - why cant my familiar answer my call??
The uber build thing is kinda making me sick as well - there are a lot of carbon copies going on around here like SD builds Wiz builds (all same feats etc) Hopefully the cheese thing will fix this up
BTW has anyone ever thought of just removing disarm like u did dev crit? its causing way to many proplems or just make it like the giants on mountain they r immune to it i dont know some item each character starts with that makes u immune to disarm but if u want u can still disarm ogres etc then??
well thats it from me great server great dev dm workrate but as our leaving friend said some things are a little wierd but hey it is beta after all

The dragons of AO are trapped on this plane and removed from all others. They have been forced to adapt and to stand together fo rall dragonkind dominance of the realm.
If they bickered amognts themselves then they would be destroyed. That is why The Red and Gold come together and that is why alignment and good evil views went out the window.
Its a game, and its a seperate universe from the norm. Deal with it:)

There is a server that I know you may like... it is called Amon. The action side is Amon 1(a,b,c) - but there is a strict RP server called Amon 2. Same worlds different play styles.
Anyway, I'm not trying to promote another server on this forum, especially since I've found myself back here. Just offering some info.
