Okay - what character you going to make first?
the thing is tho that clerics can be melee, support, healer, offenive/defensive spell caster. mages dont do all of that.
and the thing is, that a well built cleric can excell at all of those.
domains put them up aboce druids otherwise druids wud be much arguably better.

Solo/Team Classes
Clerics are good because of pets and melee, and are vital to make rez and raise dead scrolls for everyone.
Druids are very good becuase of the extra pet from animal companion(lots of those to find) and becuase they get premo and Spell resist.
Sorc/Wiz are good becuase of pets and magic of course and are vital for most good potions.
Bard is tough but once you get past first few levels you can get a pet and be a nice archer or finesse class, or support.
--
Paladin is nice because they dont run from dragons and demons and they get alot of weapon buff spells later.
--
Fighter is quick to level but can get overrun easy
Use a shield
Barbarian is like fighter but needs some support
Rage and go for mega dmg or use a shield.
Ranger is capable becuase they can charm an animal. Otherwise like ftr.
--
Rogue is the epitome of a party class. Alone it is a lonely life of sneaking and stealing and hard fights. In a party it is a death dealing dmg machine with melee or archery and sneak attack.
Monk is a double edged sword. At low levels solo you will get hurt.
Once you get the AC up and stay away from undead/demons solo you can be ok. Best with party, hence the fast speed to run from group to group.
--
Now throw in subraces and all of these can get pretty unique.
Remember that ECL slows you down alot in the mid and high levels, but makes for a more powerful build.
Kender/Anything for fear immune is a good combo.
Planetouched/Anything is good but the rez penalty is harsh.
Drow/Anything is insane at high levels from the SR but slow slow slow to level.
My new favorite is Paladin/Sorc Aasimar.
20% Immne to Elec/Cold/Acid
Immune to Dominate and Charm
+2 Wis and Cha
Fear and Disease Immune from pally
Great saves
Can fight with a great sword and buff it up big time with greater magic, keen, flame, etc
Good pets.
Talks the talk.
50 xp/per lvl and 10% gp penalty on raise dead/rez or respawn though.
2ECL - Slower to level
Everything has a price
I wont go into prestige classes, but these findings are just based off of my extensive playtesting.

But remember friend this is NS4 not NS3. I myself am going to be a Pally/WM aesmer thingy, my 2nd char will be a strait cleric, then of course everyone needs to be evil some times \<><>/
Soooo my 3rd char will be some *looks up how to spelll word* concoction of a Black Guard assasin build as this is my favorite build ever in any D&D game:!:, it just needs some goody goodies to be slain, so the only question is wether you can have chars in more than one faction easily? I would *again* presume so, but still, its a "whole different type of animal."
P.S. DD is there any way we could get a live update system on IRC of the status of NS4 *realises he has become the ever annoying poster* but really the wait hurts my head, and my grades hehe (wait till NS4 comes out. . . ouch)

Right now You can have chars in any faction you want and you can have chars in all of them if you please. I hope it stays that way.
Black Guard/Assassin won't be possible unless the "only one Prestige Class per char" rule is lifted.
