Joran - Track combat.. and connection status.. i assume you can check connection status of a player at any time.. If in combat with NPCs which i assume cane be checked.. and they crash, 'connection timeout' or some such.. let them be.. If they close their connection which im guessing is going to be a different command t the server expecting a response, while in combat with said PCs.. kill them.. for pvp.. leave it alone.. if people want to log out to avoid a fight let them.. but the screen shots shall be taken, and their cowardice on display for all....

The mostly likely time to crash or be timed out is in battle. I have never purposely used this exploit but i have crashed or lagged out of battle many times. Be carefull you don't punish unfortunate people.....Such as in Alexia's case at the start...

A possible reason for logging out in pvp. I'll give an example of when i have done it. I'm a 20th lvl cleric ( would be higher but no hotu yet ) and usually solo in menzo. While i was fighting a large number of guards ( 10+ ) a higher lvl mage comes by ( not sure on lvl, was purple to me ) and casts one of the bigsby holding spells on me. Now, i'm unable to do anything but stand there with all those guards beating on me, so i quit out. No way am i gona lose exp because of this. I wait a few and log back in, manage to get imp invis off and walk a feet away before i'm hit with another bigsby. A few guards agro on me, and then the mage hits me with a couple isaacs. I'm thinking ok np, pretty shady tactic but he got killing blow so no exp loss.

I start running back again, checking player listing along the way and notice the mage is no longer on. So i start fighting guards again, right after i finish a set of guards the mage pops up and casts bigsby on me again, then kills me with isaacs. Sucks but i'm ok with this as i wasn't currently engaged.

I come back a third time, this time with my pvp spells up, and notice him standing by a bunch of guards. Cast implosion on him, boom dead mage. He then logs off.

I have no problems with pvp and in fact really enjoy it. I'm totally against attacking someone while they're engaged however. And whenever a player attacks me while i'm engaged ( though this really only pertains to other casters as melee wouldn't be much of a problem for this ) and it looks like i'll stand a good chance of losing exp, i'll quit out. I hate doing it and in fact have only done it the one time but i refuse to lose exp that way. As long as i'm not engaged, no matter how low on spells or hp i am or if i've spent a long time traveling to an area, i will stand and fight any player(s) who attacks me.

This is just one reason why some may be quitting out mid fight. Since it can be exploited to survive virtually any fight and used to replenish spells though, something needs to be done about it. IMO the suggestion for a required time to log out ala EQ paired with spells not refreshing every time you relog would be best.

Good idea and philosophy; however, I must ask... how do you get a screencap of someone logging out? Their avatar just fades (and there can be many reasons for the fadding.)

Might I suggest a reporting mechanism. I believe it is safe to say that anybody who is using this "tactic" with one is using it with many. So if you get the same perpetrator pop up from several different sources you get a warning flag and then a dm can talk to the person doing the logout as an exploit to get their side of the story (and warn them that it is considered an exploit.) Punish if they continue (they'll show up in the reporting log again.)

An old server I played on used to wait a few seconds after the player logged out before saving the character and making it disappear.

Grinum - in a pvp server with the rp factor the way the Devs and DMs have set it you should ecpect to be attacked if you are engaged in hostile territory. Clearly being in menzo using their guards to mill exp is going to have the people there trying to kill you.. Clearly they should be using every way to kill you.. ITs a group effort between NPCs and PCs to defend the city.

I have to agree with qui on that. I'd rather you not lose the xp as you're being jointly, but i have no qualms about attacking enemies who are in combat already, especially if they happen to be killing my people.

I know, I'm contrary... but I don't blame those who are being PKed for logging out.

And no, it wasn't me who did log out during a PK.

Why don't you disagree agree with it, what are your thoughts on the subject?

My thoughts are this.

The logging out in a PvP situation occurs in largely 2 situations. A player is ambushed when they are vulnerable and not(in their mind) combat worthy, and those who do it all the time to gain an advantage.

The first is a product of the hostile enviroment created, people are acting largely on the "easiest fastest" way to kill someone in their lands. Many times you'll see people attack other players while they're resting, just as they start buffing, right after a fight when they're exhausted or during a fight while they're currently engaged. To take a line from the movie Troy(a good movie, I encourage you all to see it) "Even enemies can show repect."

The second are exploiters that will be dealt with by the DM Team appropriately.

A script to track this sort of stuff would be time consuming, involved, and probably very inconvinient. A far better solution would be to change how you interact with others. Treating others with some dignity and respect can go a long way.

I'm completely against a penalty, and here's the reason:

I've been attacked and killed by players about a half-dozen times, always by someone who so overpowers me that there's no chance of survival. Three of those times I respawned without any problems; however, the other three times I got disconnected during the respawn, and took both a gold and xp loss. This problem HAS NOT been fixed unless it's been done sometime in the last 24 hours.

That makes pvp dangerous. In my case I have a 50/50 of respawning okay, or taking a big loss. For that reason (among others) I avoid pvp like the plague. I would anyway, but the penalty is real and it happens and it really, really sucks to get wasted by some 20th level mage (read: 10-year-old boy) who thinks it's funny to kill someone who doesn't stand a chance against them - and then get hit with a respawn penalty to boot.

Fact is, I think pvp should be banned entirely - or that another, non-pvp faction should be included - until the respawn problem is worked out. It's more than just an annoyance so long as the servers and the scripts are acting flaky.
