Characters Logging out during PvP

Post by Alexiagold »

Something has to be done about this. Almost everyone I've ever fought abuses this to prevent thier death or get spells back. I know its not tolerated and against the rules, because I was DM killed numerous times when my computer crashed and I logged back in still alive. I have numerous screen shots of some of the worst offenders if the DMs want them. Otherwise I'd suggest something like automatic death for anyone logging out during combat, since anyone crashing during combat will likely result in death anyway, I doubt the innocent will suffer much for a script like this.

Is there any way to script it so that you have 25% of your normal hps and no spells memorized when you log in? I don't think it would be unreasonable to have to rest upon logging in for any reason in order to try and curb that behaviour. Maybe a temporary stat debuff while you "wake up" from the portal that brought you back into the world too, with all stats set to 6 until you rest.

A really good solution, if possible, would be to do like many games and leave your character in the game in NPC mode for a minute or so after logging off.

I have no idea how to solve this, but your right alexia, heaven's I have done it before, and something should be done. DOn't know what, but its a huge tactic that continually happens and is abused
I've tried fire, i've tried faith, and i've tried force, all I have left is hope.

I'd have to agree with Qui here, Why the heck would someone log out when we no longer lose xp from PvP? I know apparently during the past three days we did but now that's fixed, alll you lose is some pride and that can be cured by some more levelling hehe.
Don't whine if you get pked, make sure they're gone, level like crazy, then go kick their butt.
*ahem* In other words, not my fault you're not level 23...

(i'm just asking for it aren't I?) Ah well....

First let me just say that my experience with PvP is very limited, just so you know a little about where Im coming from.

A possible problem of adding penalties at log-on is the PvM consequences. Considering the current stability of the server this would seem a bit dangerous. I personally have been disconnected in the middle of a large fight, if I reconnect Im not only surrounded, but some of those I already killed would have respawned. Respawning with a fraction of your life in the middle of freshly spawned mob of equal level to you is practically a guaranteed death, even worse if you depend on spells and your spell books are empty.

Then again maybe the stability problem is just me. I have lots of bandwith but I have quite a high ping due to the actual distance from the server, I live in the Philippines, one bad lag spike and I could be timed out, maybe I get disconnected more than most people. If stability was not a problem then this kind of a solution would be ok, it would be up to the player to make sure he logs out at a safe location.

But back to PvP, what do you guys think about logging off to avoid a fight and not in the middle of one. Say for example you come across a high level who obviously wants to kill you and you dont want to waist anytime walking all the way back, so you log out then log back in when you think its safe. Do you think this is also bad form.
When you cant change the game, change the way you play.

i dont get the whole logging out of pvp deal either..........you dont lose anything wtf?

sometimes i timeout/crash during pvm fights, to log in back dead would be highly annoying. it's already bad enough leaving your groupmates 1 man short during that time.

this is just 'bad pvp etiquette'.
same with the logging of high lvl chars to stake zones...

yah, and when it's PvM, you usually spawn right in a nest of the critters, tell me how killing one then logging is better than just running? Besides, i've heard there's some bug out there that makes you slowed upon log in or sometin

Lol, compare how many times better this would be for a fighter vs. a mage

This is something we're working on. It's quite difficult to puzzle out a reliable fix, however, so any suggestions are of course welcome.

I'd do it like in EQ. It takes like a minute or something to log out. Other games usually keep you in unless you log out with their method, and this keeps you in game for a little while afterwards. But this leaves you vulnerable and defenseless, so i prefer the wait time before logging out. Having a command like /log that would start your rest(like normal), and log you out afterwards would be nice.
And yeah, there was the same problem in Shadowbane, people could type /quit and it'd immediately quit the game and they'd disappear. But that game had more effective dots and so usually the person could still die. In this, they almost always live, even if they log out at near death, which is really annoying. So not letting the normal quit work in combat or say 20 secs after combat would be nice or have the ~1 minute rest thing instead.

the logging out thing is quite a phenomenon. I suggest however, to fix everything else, such as bugs that cause server to crash for example. Or bugs that could cause a player to crash. Either way, they should be cleaned out first so that we'd have a more clear distinction whether a player logged out because he wanted to do so or he logged out because he had crashed.

For a player logging out (because he wanted to do so) perhaps the devs can create a script to create a check on the character profile, such as if he is currently poisoned, if he had some of his attributes lowered, what spells are left in his book, if he was slowed, knocked down, etc. Once he logs out manually, the 'checker' would operate. The next time he logins, he gets the same effects as before he had left.

Ex. a mage wastes his/her spells and logs out; next time he comes in, he realizes his spell book is the same as before. No more 'infinite' spellbook anymore.

Another example: fighter leaves with 24/255 health, he returns and sees that his health wasn't restored fully! He comes back with the same 24/255 hp
Just be careful that we don't nerf people logging out. We shouldn't give consequences to players who logged out just because they crashed.

Well if people couldn't log out during combat, that wouldn't be a problem. And since crashes thend to affect everyone, they would be on a pretty even footing on returning. Although tracking spells and hp and animal companions etc. in an item somehow would be nice in order to make sure that a mage doesn't get back all his 9th level spells, or that a near death fighter isn't instantly healed.

i think andrew has a good idea.......is there a way to catch a logout rather than a crash/timeout?

if there is, you can perhaps have a countdown feature to logging out, maybe something like 15 secs. or have it so that you can't log out in combat mode.
