I stopped because the server lag is unbearable. EPW, Relic events, even regular spontaneous events all cause so much lag that I'd rather quit playing and save myself the frustration than destroy my mouse with a million clicks just to get to get across a single map.
Want people to play more? Want the vets to come back? Want to save all the existing guilds that appear to have no activity? Fix that shiz. It's unacceptable to expect players to deal with this type of lag on a 10+ year old game when they can go play neverwinter, path of exile, DotA, LoL, and a billion other steam games that don't lag, for free.
I'd be curious to hear reasons from the other players as well. Feel free to blindly agree with me though

Re: Why have the players stopped playing?
Lag hasn't really been an issue for me. Even EPW we're still averaging 15-20 players per party each week and although lag exists, it seems to be playable, if not negligible each week. It's not been a common complaint after a server reset. Perhaps the problem is on your end? Or maybe these newer games transfer information better?

Re: Why have the players stopped playing?
I think you've been playing with it for so long, that 'negligible' and 'playable' mean something else to you. I would go so far as to say that you must be the only one NOT lagging during the relic events, EPW, balor events, etc. Which would be a very strange phenomenon.
The server was fine 3 or 4 years ago. Whenever they found the NS4 server hidden behind that wall and it was forced to be moved, that's when it all started going downhill. It's been moved multiple times since then, but it's never gotten back to the way it was.
After considering it 'negligible' and 'playable' for so many years, I woke up from my brainwashing after a few badly lagged events and decided 'nope, this really isn't the way I want to play this game'. Then I stopped playing. The server shouldn't require a reset 8 times a day in order to bring it back to an 'acceptable' state, just so it can become unplayable over the next 3 hours. There is something wrong script-wise, hardware-wise, and/or net-connectivity-wise. And I understand the surrounding situations of being hosted by individuals through their own generosity as well as devs who donate their time to making the server the way it is. But I just got to a point where it wasn't fun for me anymore.
I'll go toe to toe with any player and build on the server, that's what I enjoy doing. But fighting against the server itself is a lost cause.

Not sure what we can do near future. Digital Ocean's data centers are in busy markets and UDP = lol for priority or fault tolerance.
Before that we were ok on Internap, too bad we didn't find all the 32bit dependencies back then to run on lin (not an option now, that program ended). If there's some other no cost/low cost option we can explore it, I don't think amazon would work for example, we just hit some data/network needs that go above the pocket change tier.

We play every day... a lot
the lag is not universal... it comes in spikes... and has not really changed much for us at all...
We generally have no lag problems with our morning group 6am-10am EST,
the lag is more often when we game in the afternoon or early evening...
just sayin...

Re: Why have the players stopped playing?
I mostly stopped playing because the server population declined and playing solo is not fun to me. Spending 5+ minutes trying to grind down one CR 33 mob at a time is pretty boring. I might try playing again if I can come up with a good solo toon that doesn't require top-end gear or crafting, because I also find those tedious, especially while single-logging.

Re: Why have the players stopped playing?
For me, Life got busy and grinding was no longer worth the time. I still pay when I can PvP or fit in a planar run or something, but the excitement of new builds is gone when I don't have the time to start anything new.

For me the worst thing about NS4 is people that are in enemy guilds....such as HNS, RR, FoN and Fury same person under different logins. The same person that dual raids constant and then crys when someone defends in the same manner.

Re: Why have the players stopped playing?
as far as the lag goes, it occasionally spikes, but is not bad, overall. i play occasionally, as i get bored with other things, or get nostalgic. for the most part, the pvp is fun, and very little griefing goes on.
the relics are a bit tough if you are not a long time veteran with end game gear, a powerbuild, and a way to dual log. also, some of the hidden ways between cities are hard to find if you are not a long time player, so finding your way to cities to raid relics can be tough. epic wednesdays are always fun, but other then that, it is hard to find groups for leveling, and grinding. sometimes i spend a half hour looking for someone, and only get an invite when i am about to log. i guess, some of the veterans forget that even those who are new like to have some social interaction even if they don't have a high level guy for every occasion.
ns4 is a open server, and therefore, supposedly, a social area, after all. i don't always feel welcome. i know that i can't always expect to find a group, but when the server has 4 or 5 people on it and all of them ignore me because i am not well known to them, or in their guild it gets frustrating. even if you won't group with someone, it is rude to just ignore them. makes people feel less then welcome.
going back to the relic/pvp issue. i know that sometimes chuggers can be annoying, but when you have a guy, lower then level 40, solo, and he all of a sudden gets attacked by a level 40, and a pet, then shouts chugger to shame you, while having a 2 to 1 advantage, it dissuades some from wanting to be involved in such events. for someone to stand back, while casting igms, after igms while their epic level pet beats on me, and claim it is a one on one fight is just not true. i am not against that fight happening, since that is part of pvp. however, when that level 40 veteran, with end game gear, and a epic level companion who can fight me one on one without the players help, then goes on to shame me, that is uncalled for. again, not the fight, or the way it ended, as that is the way of pvp. it is the shaming of a newer player, with a lower level guy, who is fighting, essentially, 2 opponents, both higher level then the one guy, being shamed for trying to survive a fight.
this type of behavior, as well as being ignored if you are not well known, or in a guild, as well as not being able to find a group, even when there are a number of people on keeps me from playing much more then i would otherwise play.
