Abjuration Dispelling Focuses

Post by Midterm »

Greater Dispelling attempts to strip all magical effects from a single target. It can also target a group of creatures, attempting to remove the most powerful spell effect from each creature. To remove an effect, the caster makes a dispel check of 1d20, +1 per caster level (to a maximum of +25) against a DC of 11 + the spell effect's caster level.
If I understand this correctly, this means I can have a maximum possible roll of

20 + 25 = 45

vs. a maximum possible dc (against a level 40 caster)

11 + 40 = 51

With abjuration focuses, that brings my total roll to 51.

Does this mean that no caster is potentially safe from a greater dispelling?

No a pure 40 caster is immune to greater dispell.

Restating how calculated in hopes by telling it in this manner how it works becomes clear.
40 caster levels (cleric, bard, wizard, sorc, druid) will have a save DC vs greater dispell of 51. That is 40 +11. That part is correct.

A 40th level epic focused adjuration caster's greater dispell dc is 25 (max caster level) + 6 (epic spell focus) +1d20 roll (assuming 20 roll) = 51.

Ties are awarded to the saver. So a dispeller's roll of 51 vs saver's DC of 51 = spell not dispelled.

A 25th level epic focused adjuration caster's greater dispell dc is 25 + 6 + 1d20 roll (assume 20 again) = 51, ties goes to saver.

A 30 level caster buffs have a dispell save DC of 30 + 11 = 41. This caster vs an epic dispeller will have 50% chance of having their spell buffs dispelled. Saver's 41 DC vs Dispeller's DC of 31 + 1d20 (ties awarded to saver). 31 + 1d20 roll of 10 or less = 41 (or less) spell survives dispell attempt. 31+1d20 roll of 11 or greater = 42 (or more) results in buffs dispelled.

It will, at the worst possible moment.

I thought that ties were awarded to the dispeller.

I think this is correct. A level 40 caster can be completely immune with arcane defense: abjuration

ties fore dispelling are awarded to caster.

51v51 and you lose the buff...which means all you pure casters out there that think your undispellable because your pure will lose a few buffs when your hit by a focused caster. granted you have to roll all 20's to get it, but thats a risk i'm willing to take.

also abj def makes you harder which means if you want to be undispellable you have to work it into your build

Quick question:

Greater dispelling - can it be spell resisted?
