Animal Empathy Question

Post by Gustos »

I'm playing a ranger in the Circle. While in combat, I tried to use Animal Empathy on a Grizzly Bear and rolled a critical failure. The gizzle bear became hostile and I killed it. After combat, I recieved a message that the "Beasts" monster type is my enemy. Perhaps I screwed up or wandered upon a bug, don't know. All forest animals are hostile to my ranger. There's a fix or a way for atonement in regards to ammending the relation between my ranger and the "Beasts".

bears and such usually arent' friendly. only to TC toons, which i believe you are. you have effected your relationship with the wild animals. they no longer like you. only way to fix this is through DM intervention.

Yes, my ranger is in the Circle, and I was friendly with the forest animals. As said, the above situation happened and the forest animals are hostile to me.

So you made an animal mad . . . then killed it. And now you miss your furry friends?

Yep that's a trap for young players. Did it once and never again!

Always use Animal Empathy before combat - bit like summons. Once you roll a crit failure they will be hostile to you forever more. Logging off and on does not fix it nor does transitioning off screen. It makes sense from an rp perspective - like taking a bone off a dog - it doesn't like you doing it! :D Whispering sweet nothings into a Grizzly's ears as it tries to render apart an ogre is asking for it

That's why at low levels it is best to grab the charisma items you need and take on what you can - grizzlies from memory have a DC25 or 26 which is pretty high at low levels - thats why you need to be taking 20 on them because even then you're failing 20% of the time. The usual trick is to make them see you then close the distance to them and use the skill before the combat music kicks in!

Animals are an auto success on Take 20 as are the little "neutral" boars

The various Cats are pretty safe at low levels with 5 or 6 ranks in Animal Empathy plus a level appropriate Charisma cloak.

I think it then goes Brown Bear, Dire Wolf, Dire Boar and Grizzlies and then Polar Bears in FD. I've never bothered to try with the Dire Ancient Bears to know if they can be "turned" because there really is no incentive on the server to put any decent amount of points into Animal Empathy (10 or so seems to be enough to get the above mentioned critters)

I was like you Cijah and didn't see the point in expending more than a handful of skill points into Animal Empathy. That was until recently when in the Forest plane (not sure of its real name) a druid party member was happily empathing the massive tigers there, which were a real boost to our party.

I suspect there are a few other high levels animals that can be empathed that I haven't come across yet.

Forest Home is the name, and those big bears in there have plenty of HPs to help a party out ';)

My ranger and driuid both had instances where they failed thier empathy check, causing the critter to become hostile and attack.. in every case my toons moved away and dodged arround a tree or two.. the critter quickly lost intrest and before a minute had passed were no longer hostile.
It seams the point might be, if You fail to charm a beast to serve you, You should not Kill it for your failure. Only the cats are faster than a basic toon and they generaly go into stealth b4 attack so are easily out run. Taking a life is simple, preserving requires dedication. With luck the divine will find a suitable way to test your devotion, and thus provide a means to redeam yourself in the eyes of Nature.
Twig (TSS) - Twig [CLAD] - Twigs -Fury- - SyNfully Rotted Twig - Twig'lee -Down Under- - Twig'zilla

Fergus Glonshire [FoN] - Sakij Lovac [FoN] - Zatharus Rivermoon (TSS) - Bumble (TSS) - Body built for SyN

This has also been my take on things..... if you don't cause their death and leave the area all is good..... otherwise You will need divine intervention

P.S. As always be mindful of AoE's they can cause you to anger the forest creatures if you are not careful....
