Cursing, Intolerance and Shout

Post by DM_Kim »

Yes we have the ability to turn Shout off on any player. Yes we can even turn Shout off for the entire server.

One thing I will not turn Shout off for, is Cursing. I will just Ban and Boot you without warning. Some have experienced this and more will. I get a Screen Shot of anyone Cursing over Shout and I'm going hunting.

We tolerate a lot over Shout, but language is where I draw the line. It has only gotten worse. Personal attacks beyond game flaming over Shout are getting worse. Tone it down and take it to "Tells" or I will start gunning for that too.

Be nice or be gone. This server caters to all age groups and we do have some very young ones that play. I personally will not allow them to be exposed to bad language and intolerance.

Be very careful how you speak of the NS staff over Shout. That means all the staff regardless of what server they work with. You have the right to complain. You do not have the right to be disrespectful. That will get you a Ban and Boot without warning.

This is an issue that will be a problem in the foreseeable future since NS4 is getting an influx of people from other servers due to the cleaning up of servers due to 1.69, or so it was stated earlier. Most of the pre-1.69 player base is well aware of the type and content of language that is acceptable here.
Maybe if there was a prominent display of a NS4 mission statement and some of the big no-no's it would cut out alot of the profanity and personal attacks. Maybe in a location like the character login screen to the server. This will serve to give advance warning to those coming in from servers that are not as concerned with language as NS4 is.

I may be wrong, but I believe there is a message upon login to the server that directs you to the code of conduct. The fact that said code is accessible in your diary is nice as well. Furthermore, most of the time when someone gets out of line when it comes to the code of conduct, the staff are pretty merciful about punishments. From my observations, established patterns of behavior (ie repeat offenders) are what get people banned for extended periods of time, not brief moments where someone is suffering from an imadummy attack.

Even so, you have to look hard to find a server with a staff that tolerates profane or insulting language in shout. I don't know of any, perhaps in the Adult servers section?

While there maybe something to direct you there, most players won't take the time to go look. Whereas if it is the first thing you see they "might" stop and take a quick look.

Whether or not anyone actually obeys the directive is ultimately no concern of mine since language does not bother me and I do not have children playing or my grandmother (although that would be a herculean feat if she did considering she has been dead for 8 years). I merely put a suggestion out there is all.

I know what your speaking about Lorkar. My old server had a system like that, in order to get into game play you were ported to an NPC with a convo screen repeating the Core Rules. Once a player went through that part their PC was tagged for game entry and away they went.

But it's pretty much like the journal. To many use to reply " Ya I saw that but didn't read it." Effective, yes but only to those who like to read. 99% would just ignore it, same as when Shouts go up for information and a dozen replies are to go read Wiki and the Forums. An extremely small % will log off and actually read to educate themselves.

The rest are content to bug the server with all kinds of questions over shout.

We as the players can do some things to minimize these problems when they happen. Instead of answering somebody's Shout back over the Shout channel, we should send them a Tell to answer their question. Also, if someone is being inappropriate over Shout by using bad language and such, we as players can call them down by sending them Tells. Lead by example and take the Shout inniated conversation to Tells, ourselves. I do this and that way, I'm not adding to the problem but disarming it. It works for me.

There are a lot of current/past players who ask to 'keep it off shout' or 'watch the language' or 'take it to tells'. This is 99% effective.

The biggest problem is that usually the codes of conduct are a long and boring read and so its hard to highlight only a few big issues and point them out so that no one has an excuse for not seeing them. Even when you force players through a menu, they only skim it in order to navigate thru quickly.

It's a shame that the server/client doesn't have any censorship features for shout only. The communication system in this game is truly very basic and doesn't allow for much at all... I guess when NWN was being created, they just didn't really consider the multiplayer part enough. Usually that happens when a companmy spends all their time and resources just trying to get the game on the shelves after delays and the multiplayer parts are added in hindsight or after-the-fact.
