Spell Resistance, Monks, and Bulletproof Gaunts
1. Can anyone give a rundown of how spell resistance (or penetration) is calculated in battle? I've searched the manual and forums, but can't find anything on it.
For example, if I have a spell resistance of say, 32, and a 10th level caster is casting a 4th level spell on me, is it like this?....
Caster Level (10) + Spell Level (4) + Spell Penetration & other Modifiers (??) + 1d20
must be > my SR of 32?
2. I've heard rumors that there is a cap on Character Spell Resistance in this mod. Is this true, and if so, what is it? I need to know if I would be wasting Improved Spell Resistance Feats beyond a certain point.
3. Do Bulletproof Monk Gaunts do damage anywhere near a triton, and do they give any AC Bonuses (Dodge or otherwise)? In other words, if I want to build a monk and fight unarmed, is that really a viable optioin? Is it better to focus on weapons (kama), and just use the Gaunts for the +12 AB, or just ditch the gaunts entirely and wear bracers for the AC boost.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand binary, and those that don't.

Some people are like a slinky, not really good for anything, but you just can't help but smile when you shove them down the stairs.

A little more searching of the forums has answered at least part of one of my questions. It seems that Bullet Proof gaunts only do about 3/4 of the damage of Triton gaunts, but better AB as a trade off. Still looking for answers to my other questions... If I've missed a previous thread on these subjects, please let me know. Thanks.

I have an unarmed monk, and he is one of my all-time favorites!!! While the damage is lower on the bulletproof gaunts, the +4 AB is very nice. I don't believe they have any AC on them, but with enough monk levels, that's not a concern. My experience was that building one was tough, but well worth it. You can easily build a toon with better damage AND AB even with bulletproof gaunts, but the whole point of the unarmed fighter is fun IMHO!!! I ended up w/ an AC of 60ish and an AC of 85ish. and the best feature of all - he's super fast

Ya, I'm havin a blast with mine too. She will be pure 40 levels of monk. Kira Jorian (Yes, another of the Jorian Clan) is only 28th level now, but I think specializing in unarmed, no weapon specialization at all, is cool. I'm really loving the spell resistance so far, just not sure it's going to be as awesome in the epic areas, but her SR now is 40 (28th level +10 +1Feat of Impr. SR yields another +2). Her AC is not so hot yet, but more Wis/Dex is going to help that in the future.
Did you notice the Avatar Lougha? Now we're different. LOL.

That should answer your question about SR. Spell level is used when calculating spell DC's and there is a post about that on here somewhere too.
As for SR caps, my clerics have SR's of 50, so I know it goes at least that high...not sure after that...

Ok, so it looks like simply Caster Level + Modifier (+6 for epic spell penetration) + 1d20 roll to overcome a SR? The spell level is not in the equation? That is what the post you referenced indicates anyway.
A 40th level monk with 5 feats of impr SR would get a total SR of 60, unless there is a cap.

Corrent. However, there is a certain item in the game that will increase your caster level by 4 for such calculations.Thellenor wrote:Ok, so it looks like simply Caster Level + Modifier (+6 for epic spell penetration) + 1d20 roll to overcome a SR? The spell level is not in the equation?
That's what I come up with...so a 40th level sorc with the right gear and feats should have exactly a 50% chance to hit a 40th level monk with 5 SR feats. Factor in Mords, and you're gonna get hit no matter what...Thellenor wrote:A 40th level monk with 5 feats of impr SR would get a total SR of 60, unless there is a cap.

Max Spell Penetration is 66 (on a roll of 20) for a pure class level 40 caster.
Max Spell Resistance is 70 (40 Monk with Improved Spell Resistance X).
Mordenkainen's Disjunction is -10 to your spell resistance, but I have heard that this doesn't lower the Monk's spell resistance... not sure if that is true... can anyone confirm? Should be able to be tested with the two builds listed above.
