Points Per Slot

Perhaps this is available in game and I'm just missing it, but im wondering how we can calculate available points per slot on our characters. Items show points, however I cannot figure out any way to determine if I can use an item other than buying it and trying to put it on (at that point it tells me my available points for the given slot, but at that point it is also too late from a gold perspective).
