If ya really want to go there, all items should have a certain amount of upkeep, if a set of robes has tears in it, it should not protect as well. Maybe lowering the AC modifier. If a shield is "Undamaged" then it should protect well, giving you the full benefit of the AC. If it is "Slightly Damaged...
