Consider that Enervation is a level 4 spell. Enervation's effects go away after a period time (resting also removes). Energy Drain is permanent (until you die, get a greater restore). Energy Drain is a level 9 spell. How effective is a level 9 spell if a level 4 spell easily removes the effects? On...

it's a more powerful curse than others and there fore requires a more powerful remedy to cure it. I'd say smart fighters have a chance. Properly prepared fighters can do in a mage in NS4... unless the mage is more prepared. Monks (and to a lesser extent rogues) are the real mage-bane though.
