Well, I had a longsword for close combat and a sling for ranged, I switched between whatever was appropriate given the circumstance. Not sure if that helps.

As evident in the screen shot below, combat within the starting Ancient Ones Seeth Compound is bugged. The bonus I should get from my Exterminator title is plus two against vermin.
